Student Veterans of America:
Student Veterans of America is a Chapter-based organization with about 1,500 locations on college campuses nationwide. We represent about 750,000 student veterans and work on personal and professional development, leadership training, and advocacy at the federal level.

Home Front Military Network:
HFMN is a collaborative, working with nearly 50 service providers; we connect military service members, veterans and their families to essential resources, including financial assistance provided by HFMN and our partners, in order to meet the full range of needs of individual and families. Our programs include Navigation (Case Management); Financial Bridge Support; Information & Assistance; and Education & Outreach.

WarriorNOW:
WarriorNOW has designed and implemented a program that brings Structure, Camaraderie, and Purpose back into Veterans and their families lives, and we do this through peer-to-peer mentoring, recreational therapy, PTSD groups, pro-social events, and education on topics pertaining to mental health, addiction, and building healthy relationships. WarriorNOW has flipped the conventional treatment model 180 degrees to start with building protective factors and coping skills first through peer work, and then when the Veteran is ready, we start the individual clinical work.

I have been taking care of my husband for years with Alzheimer’s brought on by loss of hearing in the service. He has been getting monthly disability from the VA. When he passes I understand there will not be any compensation for me as his caretaker. Is this correct?

VA Survivors Pension
A VA Survivors Pension offers monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime Veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by Congress. I am looking to see how I might be able to extend my Post 9/11 GI benefits in order to finish my last year in my Masters Program. I started in Fall 2019 and was scheduled to graduate May 2022. I had a family death in 2019 and multiple family crises thereafter. Due to covid in 2020 and family responsibility, I could not transfer earlier. It became clear that I needed to move in 2021 to attend to another family crisis in Denver and my master's program would not permit me to do my internship component from a different city until May 2022, thus moving my graduation until 2023. My benefits expired in Feb 2022. Please advise. It's only 7 credits remaining (which is the internship portion). I moved from Atlanta to Denver.

You may qualify for a GI Bill extension if one of these is true:

You served a later period of active duty of 90 consecutive days or more (meaning that after you applied for GI Bill benefits, you served 90 days or more without a break in service), or
You have an illness or disability that prevented you from attending school, or
You were held by a foreign government or power after your last discharge or release from active duty

Hello LT Jackson, please review the following information on extending GI Bill Benefits. I hope this information helps: Can I get an extension on my GI Bill benefits?
Reasons for an Extension of GI Bill Benefits. Veterans with certain extenuating circumstances may be eligible to receive an extension on their 10-15 year eligibility time limit for their GI Bill. For example: The condition being cited must be proven by the proper documentation and a letter requesting an extension.

Been having digestive issues since 2 years (6 years total service) into the military and 13 years after. Can I claim digestive issues? I've talked to many veterans who have the same issues compared to those at a similar age who didn't serve. I'm not sure how I'd even go about proving it.

A Veteran can claim any medical condition as being related to active duty service. Use a VA Form 21-526EZ. Once a claim is received, VA has the "Duty to Assists" you in obtaining the medical evidence. You still may not be service connected but we will do our best to help you obtain the medical evidence needed for successful resolution.

I have a 10% GERD rating, but during recent treatment at the VAMC, they discovered several ulcers. Should I file for a rating adjustment? Andrew

Yes, use a VA Form 21-526EZ. Also, if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this could be related to GERD and should be claimed too.

Hello CAPT Turnley, My recommendation is yes. Please review VA's Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQ) List and find Ulcers if listed and submit your claim. The Ulcers could be a secondary medical condition from the GERD!

As a veteran I am interested in giving back. Many recent positions were open in the Colorado Springs area for VSR's. I applied and was denied because I simply didnt have experience in processing actual claims for others. I had previously emailed to VA directly with no response prior to the posting. How can I obtain training as it pertains to working with actual claims in order to put myself in a better position to serve our fellow veterans in the future?

Hello SFC Miller, the Department of Veterans Affairs has a Volunteer Program Office. Please see information on how to apply to be a VA volunteer?
Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs facility nearest you. Ask for the CDCE (formerly Voluntary Service) office. Tell their staff of your interest in becoming a VA Volunteer. The staff will take care of everything else including your interview, orientation, and assignment! Locate the VA facility nearest you.

A colleague of mine is a Veteran Service Officer in the Aurora area and she just gave me the low-down... If you are a member of DAV, VFW, or American Legion you can apply for training on this topic. She got hers through the DAV and raves about it. She also said that the CO Springs and Pueblo area are in great need of good VSOs right now. She would be happy to answer any of your questions: Cynthia Francis [login to see]

I am currently enrolled in classes and have a question about BAH. It recently went up to adjust for the astronomical housing prices here, but did not see a change. It's been the same since last year. Does it take awhile for the VA to catch up with the adjustments? Or is this an error that I need to get fixed?

Jonathan, I know we connected offline, but just to respond here in case someone else has the same question: DoD updates their BAH rates at the start of the calendar year, whereas VA updates their MHA rates at the start of the academic year - meaning ~August 1.

This means there is a lag time between updates, but VA does this to match with typical school updates on costs, so your rates should stay in alignment with your educational institution, in most situations.

Will VA disability benefits be affected for those who volunteer to join the Ukrainian Defense Legion?

That is a legion under Ukraine, not the U.S. DOD or VA.

In addition to Andi's comment, I know the Wounded Warrior Project is advocating on the clothing allowance issue, though I can't say whether it applies to your situation or not. I'd recommend taking a look at their website and reaching out if you think they may be of some help. https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/media/qallxl5u/va-clothing-allowance-bill.pdf

Have 10% disability for hearing loss and tinnitus for last fifty years. Both are worse, can I get a higher rating?
Andi Martinez

Under certain circumstances, VA may increase a veteran's disability rating in light of new evidence that their condition has deteriorated. Veterans may also file a claim for an increased rating if they believe that their condition has worsened since they were initially granted their disability rating.
