Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is resigning, a senior defense official confirmed on Monday.

Hagel has submitted his letter of resignation to President Obama on Monday morning but has vowed to stay in the job until the Senate confirms his replacement, the official said. It was not immediately known who the nominee would be.

Obama and Hagel made the "mutual decision" that now was the time for Hagel to step down, the official said.

A ceremony at the White House was expected later Monday for the formal announcement of Hagel's departure.

About time. I would seriously like to see Gen. Mattis in that slot. Time is coming when you will need a non- politician to seriously run the military.

Be carefull what you wish for...next you will have SSG V. Michelle Woods asking if we need E-9s and before you know it you have an E-8 in charge?

MSG Brad Sand what I am hearing is that you want to be the next Sec Def? Move the SGMs out of the way and make room for the mighty MSG?

SPC Jeff Daley, PhD I feel that any cabinet member would have difficulty conducting their business properly with a micromanager over them, no matter whom it may be. That goes the same with being on a BN or BDE staff and having an overly micromanaging commander.

What will likely happen is we will see the nominations for simple "Yes Men" but the real question is can the new 114th Congress actually fight for a hard working, intelligent, caring replacement?

I think that I would be the perfect Secretary of Defense. My two weeks in the position would be great for the military and our Nation...I might be able to last three weeks, but I would not get my hopes up. In reality, and I think this is the problem with nominating most senior NCOs, confirmation would not go to well...politicians are not use to being told the truth...in my opinion (see I can learn?). I think Republican would only support my nomination because of the official statements I would be releasing on Facebook and RP…I learned from our Sec of the Navy that Facebook is the proper medium for releasing official statements.

While the good GEN did amazing work in Afghanistan and Iraq, I am not sure if this is his cup of tea.

Worse yet, can you imagine the yelling and complaining from those that attacked him over his affair? It would lead into all manner of "War on Women" diatribes.
