Investigators found that Ms. Gilbert was the target of a series of escalating reprisals after she reported failures in infection control at Womack to the Joint Commission, an independent agency that accredits hospitals, in January 2014. The hospital, in Fayetteville, N.C., serves 55,000 active-duty service members and their families at Fort Bragg.

Ms. Gilbert’s decision to contact the commission led to months of turmoil at the hospital. Inspectors found a series of shortcomings, and the hospital’s accreditation was endangered. After a young mother died after routine surgery, the hospital’s commander was dismissed and his deputies were replaced.

Ms. Gilbert’s experience was described in an article in The New York Times in December that detailed numerous cases of military physicians, nurses and other health care workers whose careers were damaged after they complained about lapses in safety or quality of treatment. The hospital workers contended that they had been pushed out of their jobs, transferred, given pay cuts and punished with negative evaluations after reporting weaknesses in care to their superiors.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL It takes a lot of courage and we need to make sure that our soldiers and veterans are getting the best possible care. There is no excuse for this type of service on a military installation.

I am happy Ms. Gilbert had the courage to report these violations! It took a lot of personal courage to stand up and do what was right. At the end of the day, the Troops, our local Veterans and their Families are all indebted to her for identifying the problem and then taking action in the case of inaction. Glad the case was favorable for her because it appears as a clear case of reprisals!

How sad that we have to depend upon the courage of an individual whistle blower to reveal a shortcoming that would have been exposed by proper administration and quality control processes. Courage is too rare a commodity to place our trust in. Maybe, instead of simply protecting whistle blowers we should reward them so that a little less courage is needed to step forward.
