CompTIA’s A+ certification has been around since 1993 and is widely accepted as the foundation for entry level Help Desk and PC Technicians. As time moves forward, CompTIA carefully tracks technology and its impact on the work-world, making adjustments to their certifications to reflect any changes. They state: “We continuously review how trends change the roles that CompTIA A+ certifies and work to adapt the certification to industry workforce needs, and the 900 series is a reflection of the current knowledge and skills needed by today’s IT professionals.”
The CompTIA A+ 220-901 and 220-902 exams were released on December 15, 2015, and the 800 series exams (220-801 and 220-802) will be retired on June 30, 2016.

Yep but your certification is good for 3 years from the certification date, so you are all set till 2017!

A lot of these things are when it comes to any kind of "update" right? so it could be about the money but keep in mind technology is forever being upgraded and the content needs to be to reflect those changes.. Its been 3 years since the last update. Do you think 3 years is too soon for a new certification exam?

PO1 Andrew Gardiner - That is true in most cases. A+ is one of the few exceptions. The types of components have changed, but the components themselves are still there, relatively in the same location, and mostly easy to identify. That was the point. Contrast that with Security Certifications that do need to be updated constantly as it is a growing battlefield.

I agree, A+ is a certification that should not require individual to be re-certified every 3 years. In 1999, when I first got my A+, it was much harder because you have to actually know all the Hardware including IRQs and DMAs as well as Windows 98 & DOS. Today component is pretty much plug and play unlike it was back then when it was plug and pray. Installing an OS now, is a piece of cake compare to the Windows 95/98 era where you would actually need a bootdisk with a CD-ROM drivers in order to get into the DOS prompt with access to the CD-ROM drive just so you can install the OS. It wasn't like NT where inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive and it would automatically begin the installation process. Additionally, you don't have to mess around with the IRQs or DMAs for every card you add to the computer. The major changes I've seen are the connectors such as EISA & ISA into PCI, along with AGP into PCI-Express. However, it's nothing significant enough to require a re-certification because once you know how to build and fix a computer you would more than likely be up to date on the technology.

PO1 Andrew Gardiner - That makes a lot more sense. I was told when preparing for the test that you had to sit for the test every three years. I stopped my prep at that time. I was not willing to do that for a basic PC repair certification. CE is so much more reasonable.
