Did you know the Air Force has a new tanker coming on line?

SSgt Alex Robinson 8 months behind schedule and $1B over budget is ludicrous. Whoever the program manager is along with Boeing's executive responsible for the KC-46A tanker should be hauled in front of Congress to show cause.

LTC Stephen F. What project- military or otherwise is on time and under budget? There needs to be penalties for such insane over runs in cost and time..

SSgt Alex Robinson - generally the big ticket items such as Aircraft Carriers and major aircraft systems are over budget - I think the same philosophy as was used on the major banks that they were too big to fail :-)
Smaller and less visible items such as uniform contracts, tools, piece parts, etc, seem to be able to come in at or near budget.
Additionally items such as computers and peripherals which do not require military specs come in under budget because the competition to get the contract is fierce.

I'm a little late to this particular party. I've known it was coming, but I haven't been following the progress as closely as I normally would. I find myself shaking my head at the cost overrun and schedule delay. From the article: "It has taken nearly 15 years to get to this point in the development of a new tanker..." Hello, Boeing, you've built tankers for us before! I know it's been a few years and that particular brain trust has long since retired, but it's not as if you're designing a completely new airframe from scratch. I realize the 15 year development time is not on Boeing, but with the design and simulation capabilities that exist, modification of an existing, proven airframe should have been a relatively simple exercise.
