Hello all,
PCSing to Fort Hood in March, currently trying to get to ALC to make SSG. Going to MI BN on post, I am a 35G myself. I am single, looking at engagement in the future, maybe.
Getting mixed information and still waiting for a sponsor to get in touch:
Some people say that SSG and below live in barracks, others claim SGT and above live off post.
Does it differ by unit?

From DPW, Housing web site FAQ, updated this year."Barracks Facts at Ft. Hood
Q.   Do I have to reside in the barracks at Fort Hood?
A.   Yes.  All Single Soldiers without dependents, in the ranks of E5 or below are required to
reside in the barracks."

That implies SSG and above may choose (with the local commander's approval) to live off post.

SGT (Join to see) When I was there a little over a year ago, zero SSG lived in the barracks, and some single SGTs got to move out of the barracks. If you get one of the units on West Fort Hood I would recommend finding a place in Copperas Cove, or if you are on main then I would go to Temple. Temple is a drive, but the area is a lot better.

Thank you for that information.
From what I understand, I will be on West Fort Hood, so good to know.
I'll look into Temple.

SGT (Join to see) I’m headed down to 504th also in a few months, hopefully will pin E5 before I get there. What’s it looking like down there?

Hood has a lot of space on post now.. so much so, they are renting houses to non mil affiliated civilians.
Now that's family housing... Barracks space has been feast or famine..... and I've been out of the game since Dec 13 now so no idea where they are in the cycle today.
By DOD policy, the space on post has to be at 95% fill rate before they can authorize BAH for a single SM rank immaterial.
It was hardly ever at the fill rate 2005-2014 when i was there..yet commanders choose to buck the system and authorize BAH.
It only takes a local commander to sign, and a bde S1 (and that commander) III Corps Comptroller (and that commander) to not throw a wrench in it to get any SM BAH.

That's great to know.
Ideally, I would prefer to have BAH authorized but I can understand if it's by fill percentage too. I suppose it'll end up being dependent on the command I fall under.
I'm just trying not to rush into a marriage just because it would be more convenient if we're looking at trying to co-habitate first. But I also know the Army absolutely prefers this.
I'll keep eyes open for what it looks like down there.

SGT (Join to see) - See my later response, it solidifies my memory of the way it was.

SGM Erik Marquez - Roger, I just saw it. That seems now like an obvious approach but I hadn't considered looking at the housing page itself. Was searching in the unit's page.
Well, I suppose that's just more encouragement to try to magic myself into ALC so I can get promoted.
