Do the reserves pay for you to fly to your unit if it is too far to drive?

I've been told the reserves will fly you to your unit if you need them to. Could someone explain this?

There is something called IDT (i can't remember what it means) in place. You submit a travel voucher through DTS and it will pay UP to 300 dollars of your plane ticket. And you have to use your govtcc, of course. Just get with your unit for specifics, Sir.

Sir,
SSG Livingston is correct. It is IDT up to $300 using DTS and GTCC but it has to be pre approved and is not a guarantee. Many units that do this also provide lodging (not through DTS). Usually only for critical MOS/AOC shortages for a unit (almost always key leadership positions). But it is based on availability of funding through the command. Not sure if National Guard has a similar program. Lower enlisted or non critical MOSs will be sent to a closer unit/told to reclass.

It's 23.5 cents per mile, and it's zip code to zip code, not door to door. Use IDT every month. It's 598 miles door step to door step for me.
IDT stands for Inactive Duty Training.

USAR: The $300 travel reimbursement is limited to critically short MOSs or units - I asked DA - as of right now, that means everybody. Right now, you can also use Lodging-in Kind (LIK) that gets you a hotel and doesn't eat that $300 limit, but they're getting ready to change that very soon. Another option, not highly useful for most, is to fly Space-Reserved for IDT travel - but good luck trying to get a flight when/where you need to. DTS tells me they will be including this possibility as a CTO function in the future...

Bills also get introduced to Congress almost every year trying to get ALL Reserves travel reimbursement, no matter the distance - but they keep getting shot down. We should all write our Congressmen to show our support of it.

I did some Googling for you. The short answer is, ask your unit but I do have a couple of sources for you to research further:
http://themilitarywallet.com/national-guard-reserves-travel-deductions/
According to this one, you can claim your travel on your taxes.
http://themilitarywallet.com/reserve-idt-travel-reimbursements/
This one covers the reserves more than it does the National Guard (I'm not sure if you're in the Regular Reserve or National Guard Reserve).

How to Deduct Travel Expenses for National Guard and Reserves
Members or the National Guard and Reserves may be eligible to deduct mileage and other travel expenses if they live more than 100 miles from their base.
