Do you consider going to Korea or Okinawa, or going on a ship, a "real deployment"?

Korea is not a deployment, neither is Japan. Ship duty, however, is a form of deployment. Those vessels can be directed into combat operations at any time as needed.

SGT Joseph Gunderson and CPL (Join to see) an operational deployment on a Naval or Coast Guard vessel could go to combat, but just fighting the ocean can be a hazard, ask the guys on the Fitz.

Actually, there is a brigade size element that rotates through Korea. Technically it is a deployment as these soldiers are not permanent party

SFC (Join to see) so since my brother not station in Germany and his unit doing a 9 month tour there then are they on a deployment? Or just a tour!

It sounds like he is on a deployment supporting Atlantic resolve... it's a deployment, just not a combat tour.

IMO, if you are away from home for an extended amount of time, you are on deployment.

Soo if you're training in the field behind your company AO for a month that's a deployment?

SPC Calvin Gross - Okay sea lawyer... the OP was wondering if going to Korea or Okinawa is considered a deployment. Sorry, I didn't express it completely for you that I meant out of area. You can worry about patches, I will worry about the mental and family health of the people that work with me...

My mental health gets better when I go on TDY (which isn't a deployment). A month away from a screaming toddler and teething baby? If deployment means vacation, then you're right, deployment is awesome. :P
