Do you have any advice for those veterans who've succeeded in climbing the corporate ladder, only to want to climb back down?

I had coffee over the weekend with a friend of mine who posed this question and I was stumped. He served years ago, got out and went to undergrad and graduate school, and has worked his way up the executive ladder at a SW company here in the bay area. However, he said he is not happy with corporate life. Seems odd, but any thoughts for a guy wanting to climb DOWN the corporate ladder?

Too many times people climb a corporate ladder only to find it is not leaning against the building they thought it was. My advice: don't climb back down the ladder; jump! Don't walk, run!

I discovered on the way UP that i wanted to be 'hands on' not management. Move laterally to another project just starting where you have to wear many hats, the juggle the management hat away...

Congrats to him I'd say...
It takes courage to say you don't want to do what you don't want to do...or to say you don't want to do what society wants you to do. As long as you have a plan for coming down..I guess anything is cool. I live simply and I love my DOD job. Got some nest eggs for when I retire in about 12 more years. For me...after 22 years of military life...a soldier should take it easy...have a good job...no stress or little stress and just enjoy life. Not struggle and join the rat race again. But That's me I guess. Even though I am working...I am enjoying my military retirement...
