I've often wondered how The South held out as long as they did with The Union's advantages in this particular aspect. The iron-clads were an interest although I don't think they were an significant advantage to either side. Repeating rifles seemed to me to be the most important development giving The Union a more decided advantage than they already stood. I'd like to know more and you're obviously better informed than me.

I have been an avid reader of Civil War History since I was 10 years old The advances in both Technology and Tactics was substantial. By the end of the war there were battles fought where the fortifications and obstacles were close to WW1 tactics. The introduction of breech-loading and lever-action repeating arms meant that a Skrimish line ( based on 4 man "fire teams") could effectivly lay down as much fire as a unit 10 times its size armed with muzzle loading muskets. Torpedos, Mines, Grenades, Mortars Armored warships, Submarines, advanced medical techniques, Machine guns... all of those were improved or developed.
