I was once weighed and taped 3 or 4 times in a matter of 48 hours. I was under the radar, and not just anyone's radar but my CSM's radar but do I blame anyone but myself? The answer is NO. Each time I was weighed I beat the standard, and I also taped which I also beat the standard. I want to make this story and what led up to the issue short: I competed in a board and I busted tape. Anyways, my 1SG told me to go loose the weight which I was only a few pounds over or be flagged on that day. So I went to supply and requested a garbage bag and scissors and I made me a little tank top. I then ran in my ACUs with sneakers minus boots and head gear. I ran for 4 hours straight non stop. I went back to work looking like a train wreck, I changed into PTs and I was weighed in. I lost 8 pounds. Was I good then? Not really, because the last person to weigh and tape me was my CSM and then I was good to go. He said this to me, "Sergeant Martin, don't put your career in the hands of the guy who weighs and tapes you". I will never forget those words.

Lets fast track to November 2013 to now. I started an aggressive cardio training program. I performed at least 30 to 45 minutes of cardio by running or doing the elliptical at the gym 5 days a week. I changed my diet barely by moderating sugar, junk food and foods like pizza. Since November I have managed to loose 15 pounds without the use of supplements. I refuse to worry about weight anymore in term of my career.

I wish I had the program I have now or knew about it when I was on active duty. I always managed to pass the PFT but it was a struggle. I had Hypothyroidism prior to retirement and before they diagnosed it, I had put on 45 pounds. Been struggling to get it off and now it is working.

My wife and I are on a DIET (which really isn't a diet) called the fast metabolism diet. I suggest you order the book and read it. It is written by Haylie Pomroy...basically is it fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and vegetable proteins in a combination that boosts your metabolism and promotes healthy eating and the right kind of weight loss...little loss each month versus the roller coaster weight loss with other diets. In the two months my wife and I have been doing it, I have lost 17 lbs and she has lost 15Lbs and counting. It is a seven day program that we start on Monday, go through the week, and restart on the next Monday. Really good foods, recipes, are on this plan. My whole body feels better because I am eating cleaner now. I really recommend you give it a shot. If you do, don't get discouraged, it takes time to get it kicked started but once it does, it works great and you aren't hungry all the time.

My best weight loss program happened roughly 2 months ago after being hospitalized with kidney failure, COPD, myoclonus, and memory failure/potential brain damage. I was in the Portland VA Medical Center for 10 days during which I lost 40 pounds, what surprises me is that I have managed to keep 30 pounds of that weight off. My biggest problem has been in keeping my diabetes and bipolar disorder in check. I would not recommend this type of diet to anyone. When I first went into the hospital I was convinced that I would never see my wife again let alone watch my grandchildren grow and mature to start their own families. I got some of the greatest medical care I have ever gotten right there in a VA medical center. I just hope I never have to go back under those circumstances again. I have been truly blessed to be alive today. Thank you God and all those who prayed for my recovery, I can never repay any of you enough for what you have done.
