SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Why is that important and how can/do you use this in your own life/work planning?

LCDR (Join to see) great question, I would say I do, in preparation for retirement, I did a whole lot of planning and its paying off. It's great to set long-term and short-term goals. Time waits on nobody.

Long and short and for lack of a better term medium goals are important for sure to helping realize goals. Sometimes I make ones that are a little too far off with no help to get there.

As I deal with measure and metrics all the time, this is a prevalent theme. I have applied this to my financial planning to eliminate my debt and so far I have been able to pay off 2 debts completely and 2/3 of another so using this methodology seems to work well.

Learning to make SMART goals was perhaps the most valuable part of my college education. The version I learned was slightly different: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

I try as well but sometimes it can be difficult to know what is reasonable :). That is when it's good to make your goals in steps if possible.

But if we set our goals where each one is attainable, I find it boring. Many times I enjoy the self inflicted wound of a deadline. Just my opinion LCDR (Join to see)

Sounds reasonable LCDR (Join to see). I try to make decisions based on SMART processes.
I think realistic and timely are perhaps the most critical. Decisions made on unrealistic premises or too late are never good.
Repeatable processes seem to make the most sense for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely goal realization.
Marriage, birth of children, death of loved one don't fit within the SMARTY parameters cleanly.
