Do you think in the past 8 or 10 years that promotion boards are getting easier? Over the years I've seen (in my apioion) younger and in experienced Soldiers being promoted. Now I'm all for Soldiers being promoted when they are ready for their next higher rank but it just seems that many are not ready but are still getting promoted.

I don't have as deep of a perspective on this as the NCO Corps would have, but I can say that promotion boards in Iraq were literally a guaranteed promotion.  Platoons were sending really junior personnel (in terms of time in grade) to boards, and to a man they all got picked up.  They had to do a few facing movements, uniform inspections were not very picky at all, and knowledge requirements were very low.  This whole situation caused a lot of resentment in our unit.  I recognize that this is one instance, and others' experiences may have been different.

Yes Yes and Yes. I know a soldier who could not say the creeds but could sing the Regimental song and got a pass

Boards are all different at all units, besides it all comes down to the CSM, some of them just make it easy. Being an NCO is not about how well you can remember the answers out of a study guide but what you need to do when your or any Soldier gets into a situation.

From personal experiance, of sitting on many, many boards it comes down to the CSM and board members on how tough or easy a board will be conducted. But, my issue is not the board just because a Soldier or NCo can memorize a study guide does not mean he is ready for the next rank, we as NCOs that are send Soldiers to the board are not doing the military any justice. Someone has to be a bad guy and say NO, just because the Soldier has the TIG/TIS does not mean they need to go to the board, we have to counsel them and explain why they are not going and how the fix thierself and we have to mentor them and them ready for the next rank.

We ran some boards alittle different, we would ask questions and we would also put them in situations and have them explain what they would do.

Rgr MSG. I know from my current unit that they started implementing and more focusing on scenario based questions as well as on decision making. On top of that our CSM heavily relies on his leaders to make sure the guys going to the board should or shouldn't be there in the first place.

Many of the board are now focused on the ADP and CAPE. It is not about memorizing what you studied and kept in your head for weeks. I think that now that the war end ending and us Soldiers are coming back to an garrison environment, that we should be teaching them what it takes to be leaders and mold then into the next SGM or CSM for the future. It is my opinion that the Army go to a standardized test that could test the knowledge of the Soldier. Then the testing should then be given about a Soldiers leadership, values, and competence. This would pick out who really needs to get promoted to the next rank.
