"Soft" in what ways? There are defiantly a bunch of things the DoD can do to tighten up regulations but I wouldn't classify the military as being "soft".

I cant speak for all branches for this topic, but in my experience in the Air Force, I've felt too many times that the younger airman/generation seem to be too self entitled and want things the easy way and thats how its gotten. New Airman in my opinion are just breezing through BMT without any real challenge and when they get to the "real" Air Force, their mindset is that they deserve respect right away.

Okay then you might want to search the forums some more. This topic has been beaten to death and back again about the "new generation" v "old generation". Personally, I feel that if someone "breezes" through their basic training, regardless of branch, then it's a fault of the leadership. If a new member of a branch walks around as though they are entitled to anything, that is a fault of the unit's leadership. Again, this topic has been discussed 3, 4, 5+ times here on RallyPoint so if you do a search, I'm sure you'll see how others feel about this.
