I use the site often and find it very helpful and it is far better than using a phone for the same things. Just knowing the site's layout and how to get around gives you time to do other things.
You can refill prescriptions, check on appointments and just about anything medical. I strongly recommend it but what is your take?

I use Myhealthevet all the time. Prescription ordering is a snap, and if I'm running low I don't need a doctor's appointment. I can just send a "secure message" to my PCP and he'll renew them until my next scheduled wellness appointment.

I would hope more people would use this feature and would probably make life easier for everyone.

It is my primary means of communication with the VA. I do still talk to my team nurse on the phone once in a while, but I find the site so useful, that I just use it more.

The Blue Button is a tool to make patient medical records easily available for patients to download and share with members of their health care team. The VA Blue Button is available to Veterans who use My HealtheVet to enable them to create a single electronic file that can include of all their available personal health information. Veterans who are VA patients and have a Premium My HealtheVet account can use the VA Blue Button to manage their health care as patients in VA medical facilities.

My HealtheVet's Secure Messaging improves the connection between you and your VA health care team. You can use it to ask about your VA appointments, medications, and your lab results or to have routine questions answered. Similar to email, Secure Messaging allows you to write a message, save drafts, review your sent messages and maintain a record of your conversations. Since the lines of communication are open, it helps make your VA appointments more productive because your VA health care team has more than just notes from your last appointment.

I use all of its features, including downloading data, messaging providers and other staff, and researching my lab results. The one drawback is the slowness at times to collect data when I need/want it. Otherwise, I cannot complain! :-)

I have used the site for a couple of years now to order refills, locate contact information, and email my provider. However, it is one of the most non-user-friendly websites I have ever seen! I work in the software industry consulting with clients on exactly this type of thing. It's all about making websites easy to navigate, easy to follow, and streamlining content. MSG Wade Huffman is spot-on when he mentioned "technophobes". Not all of us are able to log onto a computer, find the website, and then figure out what to do to get authenticated, etc. If the VA can invest a little time and money into reworking the site they will save a LOT of time and money in the long run by having a self-service portal for vets.

"In-Person Authentication" can be done the next time you visit your local VA health care facility. Simply follow these three steps:
Print, read and sign the VA Release of Information (ROI) form (10-5345a-MHV) (PDF)
Take a copy of your signed form and government issued photo identification (Veterans Identification Card or valid driver's license) to your local VA health facility and give it to a qualified VA staff member.
After the VA staff verifies your information, your My HealtheVet account can be upgraded.

New... "Online Authentication" is for users who have a connected eBenefits DS Logon Premium account & My HealtheVet VA Patient account. It can be done anytime, anywhere, 24/7, and you won't need to visit a VA facility. However, before you can start to upgrade your My HealtheVet account online, you need to:
1. Be registered in My HealtheVet as a VA Patient
2. Have an eBenefits/DS Logon Premium Account
3. Have your My HealtheVet VA Patient account information match what is in DEERS (e.g., full name, Social Security Number, date of birth and/or gender)
4. Connect your eBenefits/DS Logon and My HealtheVet Accounts.
After you have successfully Connected Accounts. You will sign the VA Release of Information (ROI) form (10-5345a-MHV)....... Authenticated Online.....

Well this is a very good thing to use. WILL make your life easier. Just go to and register with Myhealthevet and you will get a basic membership.
After validating your information you will receive an updated version that is essentially a free premium account. You will need to go to the VA once and that is it.
Good luck,
SSgt Larry Olson

SSgt Olson, thanks for bringing this up. It's a great initiative from the VA. The biggest challenge they have now is getting more to use it. There are still many 'technophobes' in the VA system, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, it is what it is. By using this system, you are essentially freeing up people to deal with other cases which may require human involvement. If you are enrolled and use the VA healthcare system, and you aren't using MyHealthevet, what are you waiting for. The folks at your local medical center or CBOC will be more than happy to help you establish and account and show you how to use it!!

MSG Huffman and one of the great assets to that site is a direct email system to your Doctor or PA and records of all visits and labs.
