So let me start by saying, I’m not branch detailed but will be attending a different CCC than my basic branch of infantry. The reason is because my civilian education and 20+ years of civilian experience is the reason for the different CCC. Upon reading branch assignments for officers in AR 611-1, it appears to state all officers retain their basic branch until such time they apply to change branches. Does anyone know this to be the case or is an officer immediately transferred upon completion of a different CCC than their OBC/BOLC branch? I ask because I take great pride in being an Infantry Officer, enjoy my current unit and having a skillset in addition to being an infantry officer. Any knowledge on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Completion of CCC will reclass you to your new branch. That being said, a branch transfer packet would need to be completed to grant you your new branch and AOC.

2LT (Join to see) - it used to be fairly standard for Combat Arms Officers to attend each other's CCCs, particularly IN and AR CCCs. I know EN officers who attended AR CCC and retained their EN branch and continued with the EN trajectory.

When I was investigating an SF career, they were ok with me going to CLOAC, otherwise I'd go to the IN CCC.

LTC Jason Mackay that's good to know Sir. My unit uses CCC to reclass officers to CA but it makes sense to broaden officer's experience without giving up their position.

2LT (Join to see) - also makes sense. I think it is a case of you are able to branch transfer the officer by CCC attendance, but don't have to. Logistics branches did away with the transition courses, I believe they use the CLC3 to transition branch transfers and details.

Sir, I’m checking back in on the string after a few days but if I’m understanding you correctly, I don’t have to reclassify to my CCC brainch if I choose not to submit my packet or if my command doesn’t insist I do so. Am I understanding you correctly Sir? I’m asking as I want the broadening experience but am proud of my Infantry roots. Just confirming what my options may be. Thanks in advance Sir!

I'm not sure I understand why you are going to a different CCC in the first place. You say it is because of your 20 years of experience and civilian education. That's all great, but if you want to be an Infantry Officer why would you not want to go to the Infantry Course and get up to speed on all the latest in that branch? What difference does what you did as a civilian have on getting further education in your branch? Is it your intention to ever seek assignment to an Infantry unit in the future? Or do you take pride in wearing the crossed rifles, but don't really want to actually serve as an Infantry Officer in the future?

Sir, thank you for your response, all great questions so let me try to answer them this way. My civilian experience was unique and that is why I’m being pushed to a different CCC so the Army can fully capture and use that experience. While I realize the needs of the Army come first and that is why I’m assigned where I am, however if policy allows me to remain I’d like to do so and serve in an infantry unit in the future. Again, trying to understand what policy and actual practice would allow.

1LT Brian Y. Can you confirm your own outcome or any additional info you found?

As a National Guard soldier serving in the S3 staff of IBCT, I want to stay in my IN duty position for the next 12-24 months before ultimately re-classing, however, I'd prefer to knock out CCC (in this case LOG 3C) this summer. My only concern is that by completing LOG 3C ahead of time, I'll be automatically re-classed and thus kicked from my IN slot sooner than needed.

Thanks in advance!

Sir, I’m more than happy to share. As an RC Officer we aren’t required to reclassify as would our AC counterparts would be. So, I’ve learned we can stay IN and like in my case attend RCMICCC but remain an 11A. The only “catch” for us is that we may not be considered for 11A positions above O-3 unless it can be filled by someone from our CCC Branch. Further being in the RC, it is common for this to happen considering ARNG has Combat Arms and the the USAR doesn’t and attending multiple CCCs is very common and we as RC Officers tend to bounce between the two. That’s why I asked this question. Sir, I hope this helps.
