Does anyone engage in community-wide prayer for the nation and world anymore?

After 9/11 cities across America saw great crowds gathering to pray together for our nation. Maybe it's just me, but a review of the weekly news drives me to my knees. Our frontrunner candidates for President have some serious issues, our nation is very divided, terrorism seems to be spreading, Iran and North Korea are test firing missiles, the world economy is unstable. Just to name a few. Does anyone gather in communities to try to find commonalities instead of highlight differences? Does anyone gather to pray anymore like we did in the post 9/11 days? Does anyone believe in the power of corporate prayer anymore?

Every Sunday at Mass we pray for our leaders, our people, our community, etc. We have groups that have participated in prayer groups that have successfully prayed continuously for decades without interruption for these very things.

Each election year, including this one, a bunch of the republican candidates claim that they prayed about whether they should run or not, and that God called them to run. And they say that it is all part of God's plan and God's will. Yet both times when they lose and Obama won, they somehow failed to acknowledge that his election was not just the will of the people but the will of God. Seems to me you can't have it both ways. Either the winner is God's will or he isn't. It can't be God's will when republicans win and not when democrats win.
Ted Cruz is pandering to the religious crowd by asking his supporters to fast on Monday prior to the Tuesday primaries. It's astounding to me that anyone would believe that who will win the primary will be determined by God based upon how many people skip meals for a day.

If I am called by God to do something I should not assume that I will succeed. Maybe it is the journey He wants me to take; maybe we need the choice but we still have free will. God's will is hard for us mere humans to understand, we just have to have faith and do our best.
