Sir, AR670-1, Apr2015,para 21-17,pg 33-34. You should read it because it has lots of dates and details. BLUF, it depends on whether you were supporting OEF/CENTCOM and receiving Immenent Danger Pay. And yes even Kuwait!

I was in Jordan last year and we got them there. It is a combat zone but we were not conducting combat operations. We still got the pay.

LTC (Join to see) - Yeah. There were some operations out of that country that supporting operations in neighboring countries. I think we got it due to what was happening in that country. I am not going to complain too match. Jordan was openly fighting ISIS. We were next to Syria and Iraq.

Iraq, Afghanistan, Horn of Africa, certain "other" corners of the world, and Syria, off the top of my head.

The CSIB, or SSI-FWTS is awarded by a few standards:
1. Serving in an area with imminent danger pay or HDIP
2. Combat Zone Tax Exclusion
3. Supporting a designated mission
There is also no time in theatre requirement. Although most units hold a ceremony 30 days in, you're eligible for it with just one day in theatre.
Currently, Afghanistan, Iraq, some parts of Africa (although I believe Egypt is being removed), and some other countries have these two items. Kuwait, after being removed two years ago, no longer qualifies. I know tons of people going to Kuwait though in support of OIR & OFS, and very few people going to Afghanistan/Iraq.

The official name for them is the Former Wartime Service - Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, FWS-SSI. Yes, they are still given. I know a unit that was just recently awarded one last month.

If never deployed or redeployed with orders from same/different unit, attachment orders, etc., upon returning others to wear cbt patch are cut at the unit's bde level.

The unit I am currently in just recently got back from Kuwait and some how are wearing combat patches. Makes no sense to me on how that worked out.

For about 6 of the 9 months the unit was in Kuwait, it was still considered a combat location, with the pay that comes with it. A platoon in the BN was sent to Afghanistan for a bit while we were there to assist with the drawdown. I don't believe units get the SSI for a Kuwait deployment anymore.

LTC (Join to see) - Two other options is they did TDY to Iraq or Afghanistan (not sure if that gets you a patch or you need TCS orders) or they just gave them out and are nlt authorized.
