Removing or towing equipment or vehicles from a specific area is an inherently dangerous task. During these type of operations, the understanding of recovery and towing procedures along with the application of Risk Management, from the start of the planning process all the way through the execution phase, is critical to mission success.

I think that for wheeled recovery both should be H8 but I know how hard it is to get H8 so the actual operator/driver needs to be H8. I am Lucky I have 4 wheeled H8 and 2 track H8.

Army regulations states for wheeled vehicle only 1 H8 operator is required. For track you are required to have 2 track H8 operators. I also do the SOUMs for my battalion and I have not come across that SOUM. I will see if I can find the reference

If it is Wheeled, then only one H8 is required. I was my wrecker's driver before I was put in for H8, though in my (limited) experiance, most units do prefer two H8s to a truck

I am licensed to drive the wheeled wreckers in our unit. I cannot operate the wrecker as I am not H8. This is authorized for convoys and when the wrecker needs to get there for service, or H8s are doing lanes or required training. Usually both H8s are in it. But as you know, things happen

That should be the right thing to do. You wouldn’t want someone without training making a preventable accident happen.

SOUMS are found on the MMIS app easily accessible thru the LIW LDAC AESIP (or whatever they call themselves tomorrow) of LOGSA website...ones like that can often times be found in PS magazine also. PS magazine app is also on the above mention website, or they have this handy dandy mobile app. There’s a few other places to check also. This guidance may have came out in a safety regulation or something too. I’ll try to take a look tomorrow also.
