I would say any of the CompTia certs are good to have. Also get some Microsoft certs. I currently have A+, Net+ and Security+ from CompTia and Windows 7 from Microsoft. Any Cisco cert will do good for you too. It really all depends on what it is you are wanting to do in the IT field when it comes to what cert you should get

If you want to pursue security-related certifications, I encourage you to check out SANS (http://www.sans.org). Their courses are top-notch and, coincidentally, many are taught by veterans. For general training such as Microsoft or Cisco, Global Knowledge is excellent (http://www.globalknowledge.com). If you are literally starting at the very beginning, I concur with the suggestion of others to pursue A+ and Network+. These are solid foundational certs. Learn some Linux as well to break your dependence on a graphical interface (i.e. learn to use the command line).

A couple options. Go to your education office and find offerings from colleges that will give you relevant certifications. Microsoft and others offer certification programs that translate well onto a resume. PMI is another alternative for specific and more broad reaching certifications. Find those that are legitimate and you should be on the right road. A...

ITT Tech has 5 great courses that provide manufacturer certifications. As you move to the cloud computing model you want to stay in Open Standards. cyber security certs will most certainly enhance future employment opportunities.
