I’ve been trying to get a class seat, but my career counselor says it’s not open. Does anyone know any contacts at the school house? Or any tips? Or when it usually opens so I know if I should wait or just choose another MOS?

Sparky....I am gathering you (at least I hope), you have not heard of the In/Out Call.
What this is, is the list of availability of which rank/MOS can or CANNOT transition.
If your CC is telling you it's not open, then that means one of two things...either your MOS at your rank is not allowing anyone to reclass OUT or....68C is not allowing anyone from your rank to reclass IN.
But...go ahead and call the school house. Get it straight from the horse's mouth.

BLUF: You'll have to wait until your reenlistment window and/or chose one of the "always available" MOS such as 12P, 17C, 25D, etc (see para 4b(3) in the latest In/Out MILPER*).

As MSG Livingston stated, in order for active duty Soldiers to reclassify into another MOS (outside of a reenlistment option), they must be 'allowed to leave' their MOS and 'allow to enter' another MOS.

Although the latest In/Out MILPER shows that non-promotable SL1s can transfer into the 68C MOS, 88M SL1s are not allowed to transfer out of the MOS.

That doesn't mean your option to reclassify is closed, but it does mean that you won't be able to reclassify from 88M to 68C by just requesting it.

If you really want to go to 68C, then you'll have to see if it is possible through a reenlistment option (HRC recommends exploring that with your CC about 12-15 months prior to your window opening).

If your primary focus is transferring out of 88M, you can always apply to one of the MOS that are 'open to transfer into regardless of current In/Out calls'. According to the latest MILPER, for SL1s those MOS are 12P, 17C, 25D, 25E, 35L, 35P, 37F, 38R/W, 79S, and 89D.

COL Randall Cudworth I’m allowed to leave my mos and reclassify because this will be my second contract I’ll be signing. Initial Entry get to leave their mos. My career counselor said I’ll be able to and has gotten another 88M in my section into 68V.

Let's be honest, the big reason those MOS's are open is that the entry qualifications are very tough. the one that I am familiar with is the 12P, most colleges are easier to enter and the standards and classroom stuff are generally easier. I highly recommend the MOS if you have the skills to pass it, especially the math skills, but it is certainly a challenge.
