I sure do. I was in the Old Guard and built several sets.

MSG, do you have an easy way of explaining how they are built? I bought a new set of anodized medals, but they certainly don't look like yours. So, I assume they are all custom built and glued to a backing of some sort? And all the medals are 3 1/4 inches from the top of the ribbon to the bottom of the medal? So, the ribbon length may differ depending on size of medal.

SFC,

It is a very lengthy process and it is somewhat intricate. It certainly is not difficult, but there are a few steps. This conversation would be better had over the phone. Send me a private message and I will give you my office line. You can call me tomorrow and I will explain it fully.

Did you ever get a good answer on this? I am trying to get my medals together for a wedding. I tried to slide onto a ribbon bar....is was like putting toothpaste back in the tube. is it best to use a flat bar rather than the formed one. I have 5 medals ; thinking two rows, two up, then three below. When removing the pin on clip, everything was fine....but to slip it on the new bar is real tough keeping things straight.

Does anyone know how the Old Guard assemble (build) their full size medals?

Not sure what precisely you are asking, but if you mean the mechanics of it, there is a slide similar to the one used for ribbons spaced further apart that is used.

Do you know if they use a mini-ribbon rack? Or something completely fabricated in house?

MSG (Join to see) - It looks like the mini medal one, but bigger. I am going by memory, but the spacing is something like an inch between rows.

I have seen videos of this on YouTube. I would look there.

I looked there, Sir. The videos I found showed how to do it, but the outcome didn't look as pristine as the medals worn on Old Guard dress. I wondered if they used a metal plate and glued the ribbon yardage to that so they were completely flat....or something to that effect. I was just curious if anyone that served with them had a "how to" or firsthand knowledge on how they actually did it.

I will concede that I don’t have firsthand knowledge.
