My wife has created a Facebook page specifically for the families of the Marines at my reserve unit. It's a little outdated, and a little barren, but well-intended. Does anyone know of something like this, that can give examples or offer advice on how to improve the page? Anything helps.

The page can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/ourmtplatoon/

That's a great service, but a lot of what they offer falls short on the reserve side. This page is supposed to break the idea that reserves are just "that thing you do once a month" and prevent the spousal threat of "if you go to AT, you are coming back to an empty house"... Although there are services like the FRO and OneSource, they don't take those issues into consideration and when they do, it usually falls flat. This is supposed to be more personal and relatable at the platoon level.

I'm active Army, we have AER loans. It's loan you can get if you need help with finances. We also have MF AP services to help with finances. Military one source also offers 12 free sessions of therapy if that's something someone needs. I'm sure the Marines have similar programs to help its members.

1SG (Join to see) - the therapy sessions are the one good solid thing that Military OneSource provides in the reserves. Any financial support reserve-wise and you are out of luck with them. The sad reality is that many of these issues are caused by money problems.

SSgt (Join to see), before being able to offer any suggestions, I would need to know the main purpose of the page.

Depending on the purpose, having a Facebook Page may actually be a BAD idea! Most likely, a FB page is also a bad idea for your wife.

Since Pages are designed by Facebook for business purposes, it becomes more difficult to reach people through the FB page without paying money in order to promote each post.

Facebook will only send posts out to a small sample of the total number of Likes (people) a page has. If the post is considered interesting (relevant) to people, Facebook will sent the post out to a slightly larger percentage of those that Liked the page.

In most cases, for groups, the best thing to get from FB is a FB Group instead of a FB Page!

Since Pages are designed for business purposes, the main focus of communication is primarily ONE WAY, from the business to their consumers. This places a great deal of burden on the business in order to keep communication lines open and active. Any communication from the Page's followers to the Page owner is pretty much hidden from all of other Followers because it does not land in the main feed on that Page.

In a Group, anyone within the group can share things with the entire group. Because of this, the burden of engaging the Group's membership is shared with everyone within the group, instead of just the admin(s).

If a member is actively interacting with the group, FB will consider the group content as relevant to the member and FB will actively inform the member of new content that is added to the group via the member's timeline. Likewise, it the left column, FB will provide a notice to the members that a new post has been made available, next to the name of the group, FB does this also for Pages. However, by default, a group's entire membership will receive the groups posts in their feed.

This benefit help communication within the group flowing. Which, in turn, helps the group to be more active because people see when others are active and doing original posts. This will encourage member to be more active.

The fact that each member is empowered to add new posts to the entire group, the members take ownership of the group, again encouraging more participation.

Pages and Groups offer special features that are not available to the other. Depending of which added features that are desired, it would be good to opt for the service that offers that feature.

If the MAIN purpose is intercommunication of all the group's members as the Page's About suggests or says. The best option is to use a FB Group instead of the Page.

If you are interested in even more help, message me. There is so much more that I could suggest to help your wife's group. All that I have just provided is information for selecting the best FB Platform for this group of people in the most effective way.

I can also be reached on Facebook. I can be found under the same name and profile image.
