I recently received orders for Fort Drum. I am looking to see if anyone has any information on how to have orders deleted. I am on my initial contract.

Honestly, Fort Drum is such a beautiful area...especially if you're an outside kind of person; even in the winter (with layers of clothing).

The branch manager is an issue. She has been nothing but rude to both me and my fellow Foxes here. I am aware of the DA Form 4187 Request for Deletion of Orders, but that will go through my branch manager who will not delete them. What I am doing now is submitting a volunteer recruiting packet, but it is my fear that my branch manager will not release me for recruiting duty.

Yeah, our branch manager sucks. I know multiple NCOs in our MOS who have had difficulties with branch. Why do you need your orders deleted?

SGT (Join to see) - Branch is less inclined to delete assignments without justification and recommendation from the requester's chain of command. If you have a valid request then you do need to utilize the 4187 to get your request processed. Your Branch manager/representative is not the approval authority for deleting your assignment. Filling assignments is becoming more difficult with the drawing down of forces. Although your branch manager should not be disrespectful or rude, has branch given a reason why they can not or won't delete your assignment?

All I got to say is that I hope you pack something warm. The way the army is going you ain't getting out of them orders.

Don't fight it just go and enjoy your tour! You will learn from it and improve in your career field as you meet new fellows and get involved with new tasks. The last thing you want to do is hinder your career by refusing to PCS. Remember we are in a downsizing army!

Since you are an initial term Soldier and have NOT reenlisted or Extended, talk to your Retention NCO and request to sign an First Termer statement. But you can only do it one time. Also keep in mind , you may find yourself on a short tour. Once it is signed, make sure that the Retention NCO gets it to your S1 and they get it to the Reassignments section to be sent to HRC for the deletion. Also, like others have said as well...Ft Drum is a nice place if you are an out doors type.

You can only sign a 'First Term Statement' if you do not have enough time on your contract to meet the service obligation.

You can talk to your branch manager. That would be the place were I would start. I would be cautious about this also. I remember back in the you could do this but it would bar you from re-enlisting. I don't think they do that anymore but if someone thinks you are getting over on the system your next orders could be Korea or Kuwait.

I actually requested to be sent to Korea instead but my branch manager said no. I'm happy to go to Korea instead.

SGT (Join to see) - Holy $%&. You asked to go to korea and they said no! I would say that a lot of times I don't blame the branch manager for issues like this. I would blame the soldier. In this case I think they are taking this too personal. I can't say I have every heard of anyone asking to go there. It is like he is just doing it so you have to listen to them. Nice tie by the way.

I just had a soldier ask me this a few days ago about his next assignment. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for you. You can hope that you can talk your branch manager into changing your orders. Sometimes your career counselor can help out with this, as they are able to look up requisitions put in from other posts to where you might wanna go. If they have this, then there is a CHANCE that branch might cancel it. Most of the time though branch is not willing to change orders unless you have a legitimate reason to not being able to go (it's cold there is not legitimate). If they are still unable to cancel it, you will have to sign a DEC statement which will pretty much end your career.
However, I loved Fort Drum when I was there (2010-2013) and would go back if the Army sent me there. Although it does get cold, you have Syracuse and Canada not too far away. And as SGM Quick said, if your an outdoorsy person, you'll love it.

Speaking of a dec. statement, I have heard that it "will pretty much end my career" before, but what does that actually mean? What are the actual consequences?

So pretty much it will keep you where you are and the Army won't cut you any more orders. It also puts a bar to reenlist on you meaning that you will stay where you are and will finish out your contract.

Staying where I am and finishing my contract here is exactly what I want to do. I am not worried about ranking up or re-enlisting. I have heard that the Army will start a separation packet and that I'd be out in 90 days if I signed a dec. statement. Is any/all of this true?

SGT (Join to see) - It's absolutely not true. You'll be flagged for favorable actions but you will be allowed to finish out your contract. You need y o talk with ypur unit career counselor as he/she will be the one to do your packet.
