There is tons of open housing on the base since 1ST ID left. They would probably put you in the townhome style housing by the Wilson Gate. They are remodeled and pretty decent!

I honestly cant say how much has changed. I trained with E 1/46 and A 1/81 at Ft Knox. Then went to 1/77 AR BN in Germany.
When I left service, black berets were starting as common issue and 63E (my MOS) was abrams tank hull mechanic, but now its dental.
This was all before latest war in the east. And before 9/11. Training was more lax than after those 2 events. Basic training didnt teach much in the way of hand to hand. Im sure now its rigorous.
The m1a1 was common, as to where now the m1a2 is standard. We didnt have the uparmored hummers or the special armored vehicles.
Base security was commonly "C" at schweinfurt germany. Now, bases are probably higher.
The general attitude on base was more lax, which im sure now base security is a bit more high strung.
But this is just a few differences between 2000 and 2017.

My phone messes up on me. This was meant to be under a different post. Appologies.
