Does it drive anyone else nuts when a junior enlisted soldier says something that is incorrect as to why they don't want to get promoted.

It happens all the time when someone wants to justify an action they just quote someone that is clearly wrong, but they run with it. Ex: when someone says that 500 promotion points is too difficult to get for E-5 so they wait for them "to come down". This drives me insane, because there is always some justification that makes no sense. No awards, no deployments, no military education to name a few. I hate hearing this excuse.

I think it shows that the system, in this case, is working as designed. If a Soldier wants to earn that promotion - they will go get those points. If they are half-assed Soldiers who want the promotion handed to them without additional work, then they can wait until the Army is ready to promote half-assed efforts (by lowing the points).

I don't see it as an "excuse." That Soldier is telling you, in no uncertain terms, that they are not ready for the responsibility and work required at the next pay-grade.

Nail on the head sir. We have a guy that a kept his hand down, stayed under the radar, but was a really good soldier that put a lot of work into his own personal development during his off time. I came to find out that he had been going to class, improving his PT score, maxed out correspondence course points, etc. He was promoted with me a few weeks ago.

His piece of advice is to always go for the points that you can control, meaning that anything that relies on you doing extra work, like the correspondence course points, volunteering to go to WLC instead of ducking it, striving for honor grad/DHG, converting your MOS/NCOES training into college credits, etc. is all yours for the taking if you're willing to put the effort into it.

Can you change change the Post and Rename it with "Junior Enlisted Soldier". "Lower Enlisted Soldier" is an incorrect term.

I like the provoking question. DA Pam 600-35 and AR 600-20 covers the term Junior. Now is a CPL, SGT or SSG lower enlisted? Nope they are Junior NCO's. There is your professional development Sergeants.

It drives me nuts as well especially when there are things that they can do to get more points like college courses etc. You should refer to them as junior enlisted and not lower enlisted. They are junior to you and not lower

Is not about hurt feelings. Is all about mentorship as a parent mentors his son/daughter aka their Junior, we as leaders we coach, teach and mentor either our Junior Soldiers, Junior NCO's and Junior Officers in order to prepare them to take our place when we depart. But if you see everyone else as lower to you, that's fine. Also thanks for also wasting your time by writing the previous comment as I waste mine writing my comment.

I don't think its about hurt feelings either. I think its about making sure our leaders don't go mad with power and confuse themselves with God. As the saying goes "Power Corrupts" A saying that needs to be taught in all military leadership courses (WLC, OCS, etc.) if you ask me. I also believe we have an example of someone corrupted by their power in SSG Christopher Bergevine & those who voted him up. To those people I say this the NCO Creed states in part "I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety." It is my opinion that you are violating that part of the creed as your comments & votes indicate to me that find pleasure in the fact that your grade or position makes you "higher" than others. Also the NCO creed states in part "I will earn their (the officers of my unit) respect and confidence as well as that of my Soldiers." I fail to see how viewing your soldiers as "Lower" earns you their respect and confidence? Also "I know my Soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own." & "My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind—accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers." It's my opinion that viewing your soldiers as "lower" shows that you don't know them and thus don't care about their needs & welfare.

Lieutenant, I'm more than a year late to this party, but come talk to me about hurt feelings when nobody will let you have the map and compass downrange because you're a lieutenant....
