I've talked to a few colleagues recently and wanted to ask the RP community if they could shed some light on this subject. Does the Air Force really not take prior service? I've heard that they do a "window" where they will potentially accept prior service as long as their previous MOS will directly translate into an AF MOS, for instance an Army 13F to Air Force JTAC/TACP. Really just want to get some facts about this. Thanks for the help!

If you are wanting to go JTAC/TACP, you have a pretty good shot if you already have the Army background. Go talk with an Air Force recruiter. TACP has always been one of those AFSC's (MOS) that has been hard to keep fully manned.

Addison I understand I remember on Army SF side of JTAC/TACP if we had a nasty mission coming up we always wanted a JTAC/TACP. Most SF guys are very comfortable talking to the right people to get ECAS however, its always nice to have the extra help. The cool thing is they dont want anything special just be a part of the team and kill bad guys, I like it. Addison yall train 'em well.

LTC Jeff Shearer , so good to hear! I know those guys train hard.

When I was at FOB Salerno in Afghanistan, had the chance to work with people from all over spec ops command in all branches. It was really neat to see how seamless they integrated with each other. Everyone brings something.

Hell, even I helped arrange gravel to their compound so they wouldn't get stuck in the mud going out on missions :)

I guess pretty much makes me a special forces too (queue YouTube stolen valor story).... Haha, I kid.

I'm former U.S. Coast Guard. You have to have what they are looking for. They needed pilots, and I was available at arguably the right time.

Lloyd I have spent many hours on many types of aircraft both rotary wing and fixed wing but I have never piloted anything but my parachute. I was told it has something to do with my GT score. I was told the number was way to little hahahaha I kill me. Sad but true hahaha

That is interesting, we have a family friend who'd been Army enlisted, he got into Army WOCS for rotary wing, did sevl yrs as that, finished his Bach in aviation at Emory Riddle, then Army released him, USCG picked him up, I was never sure whether through OCS or direct commission indoc OIS, he finished his 20 urs with them as am O-3, I always found that of interest, the only one I'd ever met who'd done that.....

I just spent a week doing RAP with my AF recruiter just recently. Someone who was proir Army called him looking to join the AF and he told him the only way he could enlist is if he tried for TACP, PJ, CCT, or SERE.

LTC Jeff Shearer SERE is a career track and has its own AFSC in the Air Force and it’s reserve components.
