YES YES YES YES!!!! Did I make myself clear. It like giving a bloody gun to a non trained soldier.........E6 is and has always been a hard earned right of passage to be an LPO or Supervisor and should not just be handed out. In my rate C school was required + experience + the test. It was no less than 6 years. If it was it was a true anomaly. I myself made e-4 from A school....<1 year. Earned. Then e-5 year 3. Served rest of my time as e-5. E-6 is something I never strived for. Those guys busted their giblets. Never to be given. Never. You earn the right to first class whether by plane by train or by military rank. I believe not in hand outs.

Big deal, I made E-5 in 18 mos. Up for E-6 @ 24 mos. DOS before that.

Making rank too fast in the USMC motor T mos was never an issue. In fact they had to extend the up or out to 14 years for Sergeants for a while.

The assumption is if the Corps gave you rank, you deserve it and can do the duties it requires

I do think there is a minimum time limit between ranks. I made E5 after I re-enlisted for a second three years and since I to went in at 17, I was much too young to be in charge of much of anything. I'll admit it was good to have the rank but put a burden on me that I almost didn't handle. Anyway, I made it through those adolescence days to become a pretty good NCO.

I had a E4 who made out of A School and never been in the fleet yet. I put a seaman that had been in the fleet for 1.5 yrs in charge and said after he learned how work in the fleet he could take charge.

Rank should be based on knowledge, skills and the ability to apply both. Being Army I can only pass this on as "second hand knowledge. The son of one of my Army buddies joined the Navy and went in to "nuclear power plant propulsion - submarines". Six plus months of training and then assigned to a "boat". Made E-6 in just over a year (maybe 18 months). Can anyone out there verify that possibility?
