Sometimes it depends on the maturity of the individual. Historically it’s happened a lot. Richard Winters went from 2Lt to Major in 2 years Eisenhower was a LTC before World War II and 6 years later was a 5 Star General

i was never an Eisenhower fan. i think a lot of him advancing in rank had to do with politics and kissing butt.

It had to do with his diplomatic abilities to handle such monstrous egos as Patton, Montgomery, MacArthur, et al and weave then into a effective force. Call it politics if you wish.

Eisenhower was a great administrator. Even his one time boss MacArthur stated that. Like you said, by war’s end, he and his old boss were both 5 star generals.
But his go along to get along did cost a lot. Look for example at operation Market Garden. That was basically to appease Montgomery and the Brits for being outclassed by Patton.

Yes, one can make rank too fast. I 1962 I mad E6 in under 3 years. Promotion to E7 required 10 years service before I could be considered for E7. There were a few times when being the youngest (age) Plt Sgt while other and older E6s were available but I had the time in rank over them. When 10 years arrived I made E7, followed by E8 and E9. The long time I spent as an E6 allowed me to observe and learn and put to use what I learned from the older E6s. Yes it was frustrating but as I look back it was well worth it.

i also made E6 in just over 3 yrs i think it was 3 1/2. anyway when it came to making E7 they moved it to DA and then required 10yrs in service, but before that they changed the time in grade. so i made E7 in 10yrs in service and then E8 6yrs later. then when i had 3yrs in grade on E8, i got my letter from the SGMA. that was 6 months before i retired. then the decision, now that was kind of hard. i was in a SGM slot S-3 Ops Sgt which i didn't know they had changed it, until my replacement came in he was a SGM. the CG of the 24th ID asked me if i was sure i wanted to do this (retire). maybe if i took him aside after the Ceremony and talked to him i might have changed my mind. my Dad had passed away about 2 months before if he had known i know what he would have said, stay in. yes i did regret it and still do.

I spent 11 years doing Army support..I found that making rank in the Army is easy, as long as you can count to 10......But it is easy to lose as well.

I made E5 after only 3 years active and E6 after only 6 1/2 but i joined at age 38 in 2006 so felt that my life experiences helped when dealing with lifers who never used common sense instead of this is the regulation it was written 20 years ago, so follow and do NOT defer attitude, plus I saw some of the most petty "fuck you" attitude towards junior NCO's from those same 18-20 year veterans who didn't give a shit about soldiers under their command, i miss it now having medically retired after only 8 years active but on the other hand cant say that experience was pleasant either.

I made E-6 in three years: (E-3/April 1967 - E-6/May 1970) I knew my job - I did it well - was first in and last out. I didn't flaunt the rank and those who I worked with (several older that me) knew my ethics and they knew their jobs. The next rank in the chain was a 43 year old E-7/SFC. I had just turned 21.

Depends on the service & the job. If they come in w/skills & education specific to the job - why not?
And many 27yr olds in the non-military world hold positions of equal responsibility/pay/respect.

They didn't have time to learn anything. No time in service and no mentoring from senior staff. Sad

Yes there is. I had NCO's that made their rank to soon were to immature their rank went to their head and were terrible leaders.

I made E6 in 33 months. Vietnam to Germany and we were losing so many key NCO's on levee to Vietnam that they were promoting a lot of SP-5's and Bucks to E6. E-7's were a little old, but most of the Squad leaders were young. I was the Supply Sergeant. One platoon had squad leaders that were all under 20 years of age. So went the Army in the Vietnam Era.
