E6 in 3 years? Is there such thing as making rank too soon?

I've seen push button E-5s at 2 years, early promote to E-6 under 4 years, and not yet 21 years old, 1st duty station and no deployments; they were great techs but not leaders. When TIS was taken out of the equation in favor of TIR the maturity level of the average LPO dropped from late twenties/early thirties to early twenties, the same age as the average deck seaman with 2 deployments under their belt.

I came into the Army in September of 63 and made SSG E-6 in 61/2 years and SfC E-7 in 1970

It is hard to supervise a E-1, E-2, E-3, E-4 if you didn't wear the rank long enough for it to set in. In the USAF if you put on E-6 within 9 years you are a fast burner. I had a E-5 that made it in 5 but he was a very poor leader and only wanted to write up all the airman. You need to learn the follow before you can lead. Also had 2 USN SMs in a weather class as E-1s and they wanted to be "Push Button E-4s", school is only 7 months and to go up 3 ranks without severing out side of a school house teaches the kids that rank is candy to be handed out. We all want to be promoted but you need to wait your time and learn from the good and bad leader above you. That will help you become a leader that people will follow....

Yes, I made E-5 SGT in a year and a half at 19 I don't think I was ready, thank god I was surrounded by two E-9,s two warrant officers and a major that was a mustanger , they guided me thru it all.

Good lord! The average for E-6 in the Air Force when I made it was 11 yrs. I think that the earliest you could make it was 8.
I think that it depends on what exactly an E-6 in each branch is responsible for. I don't think that you can master your career field and learn how to deal with all sorts of people in 3 years.

I think it depends on the S.M. if they adapt quickly and efficiently while learning well on the fly then maybe but T.I.S. was set for a reason and although exceptions may exist they are rare and that person needs to be honest with themselves to ensure they can properly lead at that level.

TSgt Nalani Quintello of the Air Force band Max Impact I believe made E6 in 9 months due to her special duty. To me, rank is associated with one's ability to lead, not just how hard they work or their technical skills and qualifications.

I believe you cannot make E-6 SSG until you hit the 48 months TIS. I made SGT E-5 in 27 months joining as E-4 SPC. I made E-6 SSG right before my 7 year mark in the army. I have heard and witnessed back between 2005-2012 NCO's making E7 SFC in 7, E-8 in 10 and the E-9 SGM in 14-15 I believe...

Yes and No. Those who go through a lot and are able to retain the said knowledge and are good at being a shop supervisor/LPO/TPO, etc. Those are the ones that do rank up quickly (I'm one of them). But there are those who are served everything to them on a silver platter (a 1st class just got picked up for chief on their first go, due to a Master Chief). The guy is smart, he's good at what he does but I don't believe that he is ready to take on such a large responsibility as a Chief. He was barely a 1st class and honestly didn't do as much as I've seen other 1st classes do.
Also his attitude is a bit off but whatever I guess.
I think that sometimes those who make rank that don't have a lot of experience being a E4/E5/E6 are going to struggle a lot from a lack of experience of leadership.
