Everyone keeps telling me that I'm going to be disqualified for having only one kidney...so when does this disqualification come?

Yeah, I know, you've all told me that I'm never going to get into any branch of the military with only one kidney. The Army has already disqualified me and now I'm in the middle of trying to enlist in the Air Force. People keep telling me that I have no chance of joining, but I'm making more progress than you've all expected. My recruiter has my medical papers and he knows all about my one kidney. And yet, he didn't turn me down and give me an automatic disqualification. He said I can go take the ASVAB, which I took today and scored a 94 on, and then he said that he'll send my scores down to be looked at so that I can be considered for MEPS.
So....when does this so-called "automatic disqualification" show up, because I ain't seeing it. I took the ASVAB, scored high on it, and now I'm being considered for MEPS. And what happens when my recruiter says I'm in the clear for MEPS? What happens when I pass the physical and MEPS lets me swear in? What happens when they notice that my one kidney doesn't impede me in any way? Chances are you all will still be saying "You're never gonna get in! You're disqualified!"
I honestly just typed this up because I like that I'm proving you guys wrong so far. I've made it farther than any of you have anticipated and I'm just the type of guy who likes to rub things in.

If the military lets you in they are liable for any preexisting conditions. Those preexisting conditions may not pop up until you are 50 and your remaining kidney wears out. Taxpayer may be liable for disability payments along with very expensive medical treatment. Not a good actuarial risk.

You cannot join the armed forces, any branch, with just one kidney. If your only one is damaged, you immediately require dialysis, which means your blood would need cleansing three times a week for three hours or so at a time. I'm sorry. Just because someone doesn't automatically DQ you doesn't mean you're qualified. If you scored a 94, you should already know that.

If you had kept your mouth shut about the matter, you might have pulled it off, unless that is, the doc giving you your enlistment physical asks about those surgical scars. But the fact of the matter is you brought it up in a public forum which establishes the fact you have only one kidney in an easily verifiable manner.
Thus, even if you could have pulled off sneaking into the military with only one kidney, you have proven beyond all doubt that you do not have the intelligence to be an effective member.

Your recruiter probably doesn't know the difference between a kidney and a Swingline stapler but, if the kidney doesn't DQ you, your petulant, 7th-grade attitude definitely will. We don't want defiant little babies and I've personally been part of the proceeding to get rid of that ilk a few times - escorted out the front gate. PS: the 90% percentile ASVAB describes practically the whole Air Force...

If it doesn’t happen during the enlistment physical it will in boot camp. Young woman who was a family friend joined the Marines with no knowledge that she had only one kidney. It was discovered during boot camp and she was let go.

Not that I'm a betting man, but I would bet, only with a major miracle will he graduate Basic Training.

MEPS is probably going to disqualify you. The recruiter gets points for all the live bodies he sends to MEPS. (I was in basic training with recruits who couldn't read but MOS was nuclear power-related.) Good luck, but given my dad's health issues with only 1 kidney - you shouldn't be going. Your lack of 1 kidney may someday jeopardize your buddy.

Your Recruiter is not a medical provider, and is doing you no service by wasting your time. The medical review will take place at MEPS, where your “physical” which is actually a “history and physical” will be conducted. If you provide honest input, you will be found unfit for service as previously pointed out. If you provide false answers to the history questions, you may actually “pass” the physical due to the nature of medical privacy regulations. However, if your known information comes to light at a later time, most often through illness or injury, which your solitary kidney places you at greater risk, you can be prosecuted for fraudulent enlistment and submission of false official documents. Aim High! Don’t be Stupid!
