USAF deploys A-10s to Incirlik for Syria strikes

The United States has deployed 12 Fairchild-Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey to support its strikes in Syria and Iraq.

The US Air Force (USAF) revealed the deployment on 22 October, although the aircraft arrived at Incirlik on 15 October.

The A-10s, from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, are reportedly replacing the six Lockheed Martin F-16Cs that the USAF deployed to Incerlik from Italy in August. The A-10s have already flown combat missions over Syria and are supported by 300 ground personnel.

EDITORIAL COMMENT:- Do you find it as surprising as I do that the USAF has to keep on bringing this beast out of pre-retirement when accurate and timely ground support has to be provided? If the F-35 is REALLY the replacement for the A-10, why isn't the USAF sending F-35s - after all it has more than twelve of them?

SrA Art Siatkowsky - Airman; Good question. You will be told when the Select RFP Proposal Committee Selection Board decides who will determine the parameters for the draft working staff paper to define the roles and capacities required for the 7th generation VTOL/ESTOL Ground Support Interceptor Bomber has been tentatively approved for consideration as to priority for assignment of a priority allocation number.

There are a number of airframes set to replace duties performed by the A-10. People like to bash the F-35 as unable to do what the A-10 does, it can't exactly. But that's the point. The environment the A-10 was designed for is at greater risk with manpad counter air systems proliferating on the battlefield. So a faster mover capable of similar accuracy albeit sans the Gou-8, as the answer. The F-16 is a great aircraft for ground attack, the F-15E is exceptional, and the LRSB will fill those gaps. Yes, none of them are slow and low nor operate that big gun and the moral support that gun generates will be missed. But the threat environment has changed, the jet is too old sadly, it's time to move forward with smaller and smaller budgets. Niche specific birds just cost too much.
