She should have just called the Police....if he WAS trying to get any "discount" on a wedding venue or something else, that would constitute the crime of Fraud, and possibly other crimes. Then it would be between the business owner, the court and the "marine".

I don't think you should feel so strongly about the military in this context if you have not served yourself.

It is possible that this guy served back in the 90s and fell on hard times and is trying to achieve something for his past service. He seems to fallen to alcohol or substance abuse which is not uncommon for veterans. I might have taken the time talk to him to see what is going on in his life. Many veterans dont realize there is help available.

I come from a military family; Grandfather, Father, Brothers and also served but yet am not as offended as this lady.

I've always personally believed that the penalty for Stolen Valor should be getting locked up in a room for an hour with one individual holding the actual credential, for EACH credential claimed by the poseur; said credential holder(s) to be immune from prosecution for any crime short of homicide.

While I don't like to see people wearing a uniform they are not entitled to wear, I am sensitive to the fact that many who do so, or state that they were in the military (frequently USMC, Force Recon, Army Special Forces, Navy Seals, etc.) are not attempting to steal valor or to in any manner disrespect members of the armed forces. I had served in the Marine Corps and befriended a young man who was autistic and had some other problems. For whatever reason, he sort of looked up to me and in some ways tried to emulate me. I suspect that because of his self-image, he began telling people that he served in the Corps. No inflated war stories, no "stolen valor", no intent to "defraud" people. As sci-fi author Robert Heinein once wrote, "This sad little lizard told me he was a brontosaurus on his mother's side. I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds to happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply." However, wearing unearned rank insignia, medals, qualification badges (paratrooper wings, budweiser's, etc), or outlandishly inflating their service is very offensive to me and I will sometimes "call" them on it.

The guy seems to be in his own little world where he thinks it's alright to wear the military uniform when he didn't earn it, the next thing she should have done was call the authorities and them look into it, not go bezerk

If fake military are NOT cold out in the public THEY have no reason to stop.
