I just got orders to Naples, Italy and have heard good and bad stories. Some people want to leave as soon as they get there and some people love it. Thanks for everyone's comments in advance.

Wear padding when you drive! It is chaos on the road! :)

I was the former of the group. I did not like it there. I felt most content (read:safest) being on base. Taking drives away are wonderful though! :)

I heard insurance rates are through the roof over there as well. Definitely taking my wife's Jeep over there and probably getting a clunker we can put some miles one. Are you allowed to live off base there?

I am not quite sure to be honest. I was part of the NATO gig there, so it may have been different. You may want to live on base. Just saying.

I just left there about 6 months ago. Insurance rates do go up. It is best to do as you say and take one American spec. car over there and buy one "Naples beater" car. Also, understand that the American spec. car (your Jeep) will be a little expensive when it comes to maintenance or, if it happens to get hit by the locals, to get it fixed. It is considered a foreign over there. So your parts have to be ordered and shipped.
