For my fellow Army NCOs, have you thought about volunteering for Recruiting assignment? If so, what are some questions you have?

I am very interested in volunteering for recruiting. I was wondering though, if the packet has to be typed or can it be hand written? Also, I've been told by a few people that I must be a SSG before going but I find it nowhere on the RTR site. My last question is, how does one get promoted in a recruiter setting if they are not already Promotable?
SGT Scudder,
Send me an email with your full name and SSN via encrypted email to [login to see] . I can then check you packet status and see if we can get communication to your branch manager regarding school slots. The last tracker I got showed available slots for schools prior to October 2014 and SMs are deleted for different reasons all the time opening slots in near term classes. So, I don't think that should be a major road block for you.
I have flirted with the idea of going recruiting, but my current assignment (joint) and previous were TDA units. I have been told by other NCOs that to much time in TDA unit may hinder promotion opportunities.
However, if it doesn't I would like try to submit a packet. Also, I would like to know what are the chances that I can be slotted as a 79RL (language qualified slot)?
SSG Cedeno,
First, let me say I can not say for certainly if going to Recruiting duty for three years after previous TDAs would hinder you. However, as long as you were filling assignments for your MOS and rated accordingly, it should not matter if they were MTOE or TDA. Now, that in mind, diversifying assigned duties and successfully taking on challenges outside you PMOS is supposed to be looked on favorably. I have yet to see with my own eyes otherwise.
In regards to language proficiency, there aren't specific slots except for a couple exceptions possibly. But, you would be entitled to FLPB still and utilized to translate documents as necessary.

Both have the application and FAQs for Recruiting assignment as well as the eligibility criteria.
It's good to be able to talk to many different people from different walks of life. However, the only thing you are selling is you as a Soldier. You're drive is to show other young folks how they can be successful and meet their goals in the Army. If you can do that, that's half the battle. The other half is finding those people that will give you enough facetime between their tweets and FB status updates. #SMHandLOLing

SPC Kasper,
You will have to complete your PDES first. So, the Army would be able to determine your ability to remain on active duty and perform in your PMOS. Considering the COAD is an exception to policy, I do not think you'd be able to qualify for Recruiting Duty. The reason I say this is if you get a COAD it means you were found unfit for duty, but an exception was made due to one of the following: TIS which would exceed the acceptable limits for Recruiting, being in a critical skill or shortage MOS (you'd be released before transferred to Recruiting) and lastly an unfitting disability resulting from combat or terrorism. That last one would likely mean the SM has traumatic physical or emotional disabilities, neither are conducive to Recruiting Duty. However, these are my speculations.
Get through the PDES first and submit what you have. The worst that could happen is you are denied. But, if it makes it through, then well worth the effort to me. Have you spoken with SFC Conerly there at Fort Drum?
SGT Diaz,
Having a family member enrolled in EFMP is not a problem. Just means the assignment selections would be restricted to areas that can support your family's needs. As far as staying in NC and specific assignments, submit your BNs of choice in priority order. You have to understand though there is only so much that can be done about assignment "preference". When it's all said and done, it comes down to where USAREC needs Recruiters and that meets your EMFP needs. Check out my "III Corps Outreach NCO" Facebook page. I have a list of FAQs that might answer some more questions you have. If not, let me know.
SGT Odum, my pleasure!
SSG Broadbent, get on it as soon as you can. Can take some time to process and I don't have connections like that lol. If I did, my butt would be in Hawaii!
SSG Johnson, speaking of the HI! Sorry to hear about your experience. I came out right when things started to change in this Command fortunately. I've heard and seen it all. What I can say is this... There are good and bad days just like anything else. As for the hostility piece, if someone is truly toxic and hostile these days, they better have a bug out bag with a second source of income. This Command is pushing hard to meet mission objectives but there is no excuse to not take care of and support our Soldiers. They listen to Soldiers with legit concerns and it does not take too much to make things change towards the positive. USAREC just weeded out much of its senior leaders thanks to ALARACT 147. So, I'd expect to see a lot more bright minded and positive leaders coming up here. Matter of fact if you meet the requirements we are really looking for NCOs who have prior recruiting duty to convert to 79R and come back out to make a difference. Just food for thought.
SSG Johnson,
Shoot me an email at [login to see] and I will respond back with a zip file that has a reclass brief I currently use, an application walkthrough and all pertinent/required docs. To be honest, if your financial statement and Family Care Plan are strong, you will likely be approved. Branch Managers or others may sometimes think this is a complete disqualifier to be a single parent, but the fact is it isn't. It is waivable on a case by case basis. Plus, we need more strong female NCOs out there in the recruiting force.
SSG Parker,
I shot you an email with the same mentioned zip file. Just want to make sure you got it as well.
Unfortunately, the age standard is 21-35 years. Waivers up to the age of 44 are only considered for SSG (P's) and SFC's.

Good to see you resourcing all the social media tools! Okay first, the packet documents can be hand written or typed. Just be mindful of legibility and how hand written documents look when scanned/then printed off again. I would suggest avoiding hand written as much as possible. But either way is okay. Soldiers in the ranks E-5 to E-7 can volunteer for Recruiting Assignments. You will just have to review Time in Service and or Time in Grade standards. E-5s with 10 or more years won't be selected due to RCP considerations. Detailed Recruiters are encourage to and compete for promotions with their PMOS and points requirements like normal. There are boards held at Recruiting Battalions regularly. If a board suggests you be placed into Promotable status and you make points, then you will be promoted no different than anywhere else in the Army.
