Managers see numbers and leaders see people. Perhaps its good to see both which I happen to see both. I care about my Soldiers, and I want to know how my leadership effects them personally and professionally. On a numbers side, I like to save the Army money and time and to maximize output of work as I used to work in a factory. A good manager is a good at efficiency and they know how to cut out useless tasks in order to meet a demand and even exceed it. A leader needs to do the same but care for his or her people as well. My Soldiers not only my Soldiers, but they are my people; they are my tribe members.

SSG William Martin, I agree with you mostly however, from my prospective, army, specifically combat MOS's and lets be more precise, The infantry, we don't need managers at all, we need leaders, the numbers you are talking about could me numbers of bodies, at no time I would follow a great manager, get the task done, saves time and money for the army but can't lead, caring about soldiers is an outstanding thing an NCO can and must do however, that not enough for a junior to follow.

leading from the front does NOT mean that he is a true leader, he could be in front of the formation using the power of authority that he has to make the rest follow him however it has some point. That's my opinion.
