If a civilian would tell you as a soldier that they had the same training soldiers have because they play video games all day like cod. What would your reaction be? I see post like this all over the place and I just laugh knowing that this guy would crap his pants if he has been down range without our training.

I'll put it this way; Just because I'm great at playing the board game "Operation" does not qualify me to perform surgery on anyone...

Doctor: Alright sir, so let's see here, you said you're having some chest pains correct?
Patient: Yes, minor issues with shortness of breath, fatigue, just wanted to get it checked out.
Doctor: Ahh I understand. Well based on my experience, I'm sorry to say that the most prudent course of action for you would be complete removal of your lungs. I can do fit you in next week if you'd like?
Patient: uhhhh...
Doctor: You look a bit nervous, don't worry, I've spent countless hours perfecting the surgery by training with the game Operation. I'm fully qualified. If I mess it up, you'll buzz, and I can know not to do that again.
Patient: uhhhh...yeah...erm...no.

Insert lawsuit.

As a recruiter...oh yes! I've offered to put them in boots since they are clearly qualified and it should be a walk in the park. I've not had too many take me up on that

Total BS. Most of them cant even do a puchup let alone move as a member of a fireteam. COD is much different since the TV doesnt shoot back

1SG Jason Smith, While I agree Top, what exactly does doing a pushup have to do with moving effectively in a fire team? Apples to oranges there in my opinion. Either way, I got a laugh out of it so thanks!

While I admit doing a push up has nothing to do as moving as a member of a fire team, i was making an analogy that even doing something as basic as a push up or something that can be complicated to some such as moving as a member of a fire team is more difficult than playing a video game and being good at a video game does not mean you will move effectively as a member of a fire team

Gamers claim they are as proficient as Soldiers due to their gaming ability on Call of Duty. Comments?

Are you implying all this time I've spent playing video games since 2004 hasn't kept my skills at the cutting edge of constant training and effort? How dare you...

One game where I could see a benefit for learning things like movement techniques, communication, and a couple other basic Soldiering tasks is Battlefield. But COD? Nope. And no game, simulation, or any other scenario fully prepares someone for the real thing. Things like NTC, which despite the groans it makes a lot of Soldiers feel when they hear it, is pretty effective, but still falls short in that there is no way to make the mind switch from "this is fake" to "this is real". At the end of the day, they know they're coming home. In a real life situation, that doesn't exist as a guarantee. No amount of simulation can make that point a reality besides actually being there.

Actually the best game to learn tactical field movement in innumerable scenarios and environments with actual modern day equipment is Arma III. It was initially intended to be designed for use as a training simulator for the US military but they never got the contract sale so they marketed it as a video game instead. It's PC only and the only other relative mil sim game for console is. Operation Flashpoint Red River and Dragon Rising. Those are available on the Xbox 360z
