Is there a difference? Can a leader be more effective in one than the other?

Very good question also very tough answer as well. They can both be completely different or mutually supporting there are different levels of stress involved in both but the characteristics are pretty similar. One supports the other from training and getting the troops ready to be deployed, the other applying what was taught during garrison time in order to survive in the troops new element.

There is a difference between the two, both in the style as well as mental strain. Garrison leadership doesn't hold the same level of magnitude of aftermath as it does in combat. You need to be ready to make the tough choices in combat and make peace with that.

Unfortunately there is a difference in some NCOs, and I have seen both sides effective in one, fail in the other.
