I've been kicking the idea around for about a year now. I did 6 years active duty on the Navy side, and about 1.5 years of reserve time now. I have another 1.5 years until my reserve contract expires and I want to go back on active duty. I've tried cross-rating and all sorts of methods while in the reserves to go back active on the Navy side, and it just seems that with the down-sizing, the Navy isn't bringing anybody back.

What are your guys thoughts on trying to go on the Army side of the house? I've been told by some of my local Army buddies that the Army will take prior service members, as long as you can use your old MOS to fill a needed Army slot, and most likely, that I would even be able to keep my rank. I know that I would likely have to head to Boot Camp again, and I know that I am physically fit enough to handle it.

Thoughts? Ideas? Advice?

Anything helps! Thanks for your time!

I would find a counselor who knows some things, i.e. some of the answers, who to talk to get the right answers etc...

Start running two miles and lots of push ups and sit ups... I have had several Navy buddies cross over to Marines and army and love it

During this time of drawdown, a lot of the old rules don't apply anymore. I would talk to an Army recruiter about the the possibility of crossing over.

PO2 Campbell,

I am currently an Army Recruiter (well for the next 56 days that is) and your best bet to get the most current answer on Army regulation/restriction is to go to an Army Recruiting office and ask them.

Just off the top of my head, your two biggest hurdles are going to be MOS conversion and since you are currently reserves, you have to be released by your command. If your current unit is short your MOS, can tell you right now, they wont sign the paperwork you need to go Army, but if your unit is over strength in your MOS, then most likely they will sign the paperwork.

Just be patient as the process does take time and best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

SSG McIntosh,

Do you know much about the Warrant Officer program? I called them today, and the basic wording I got, was take a demotion, join as SF, and if I make it, ok, if not, I'll get slotted into infantry. My rating conversion is to a 14E, and from what I could find digging on my own, that rating is no longer in demands of the Army, as of a cycle or two ago. I can get my command to release me, even though I'm in an "in demand" rate, as there are others who can take my position with relative ease. I feel I meet most, if not all the requirements for the CWO program, but I haven't seen a formal listing yet, and I need to get ahold of either a Navy side Flying Senior WO, or an Army side one. I happen to be good friends with a CW5 on the Army side who flies helo's but he is retired now, would that matter?

As far as Army recruiting goes, we only deal with warrant officers for anyone who has not already been prior service or still serving. If your interested in Warrant officer, go to http://www.usarec.army.mil/hq/warrant/

Ill elaborate a little on the SF you mentioned. The reason they told you that is because after your MOS conversion, we have (what US Army Recruiting Command USAREC) calls business rules. These rules apply to those who are prior service or still serving. If you by MOS and rank are not on the rules list, then the only option is 18X, which is SF. This is how the process goes, assuming all prior paperwork for you to join the Army is complete, once you ship to either Basic Training (if required) or AIT, yes you will attend 11B (Infantry) once completed, you will then go to SF course. If for any reason you do not make it in the SF, you then fall back on the previous 11B training and the Army will assign you to a unit as an 11B Infantry. Its the reason they send you to Infantry school first.

Hope this helps
