Does anyone think it is wrong that schools are using Good Friday as a snow day makeup and MLK day was not? Before anyone makes this conversation a race discussion, I am married to a woman of color. I want to know people's thoughts on the change of focus in the values in our country. One man died for all man's sins and the other was a great civil rights leader. Thoughts?

Old Thread is Old! But I'll bite.

MLK Day is a Federal Holiday; Good Friday is not. It's that simple.

I think the original backbone-less poster said what he said because he was specifically picking MLK Day and not some other holiday, like Columbus Day, and knew it would turn into a race discussion anyway. There are plenty of those who still look at us black folk as something less than human and undeserving of equal treatment.

Plus, the hyper-religious want us all to live under their rules anyway. My next door neighbor is Muslim, and objected to me and the wife eating dinner out on our deck during Ramadan. I laughed at him. One of my sisters, when I was back home in Rhode Island, insisted I not order a steak off the menu because it was Friday during Lent (I'm *not* Catholic). I laughed at her.

Yes, I'm going to call that NCO backboneless, he posted on a controversial topic while keeping his identity hidden. That alone makes it so.

No one's talking about Presidents' Day (February) as an acceptable snow day makeup, and that's in February. I just threw Columbus Day out there because it's the only holiday I could think of at the time.

But why go straight to MLK Day and complain because a RELIGIOUS holiday isn't being observed by the secular school system, but MLK Day is????

And for your information, I am 47, and you have no idea what I have or have not been through. I don't need to justify to you or anyone else, but since we're taking that tactic, since you're white, you have no room to talk about what I may or may not have been through.

Bottom line, if the OP weren't trying to make it a racial issue, they'd have taken the time to look at *all* possible holidays, not just MLK Day....why not talk about shrinking the Spring Break that schools have? Why not talk about making up days at the end of the school year? They hid their identity because they knew exactly what they were doing, and knew they'd get apologists over it.

Racism isn't over just because we have a black president.

I guess that would depend on how religious you are. MLK day is an American holiday to commemorate a man in US history - whether you like him, or not. Good Friday is a religious holy day in remembrance of something that not everyone believes.

That's the difference

But we do not get off on Good Friday. At least I don't and I work for a Christian business.

How is asking the difference between a religious holiday and a federal holiday a race issue? It's a simple question, and deserves a simple answer. 1SG Whitman beat me to the punch; MLK day is a federally recognized holiday while Good Friday is not.

SGT Pefley - Federal holidays:

Wednesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 20 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17 * Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26 Memorial Day
Friday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 1 Labor Day
Monday, October 13 Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 Christmas Day

Why pick out MLK out of that list? Besides Christmas, none of those are religious (and I would argue Christmas is not religious either, but up to the individual).

Lincoln and MLK are observed for many of the same reasons.

MLK Day is a federal holiday; Good Friday is not. That makes it an easy decision, I would say.

Furthermore, if ANY public school is using Good Friday as a holiday, they're wrong. Good Friday is not a Federal or State civil holiday, it's a religious holiday. If your local private, Catholic school wants to take it off, I don't have an issue with that.

Public schools should not be taking religious holidays off anyway, and it's just wrong to go straight to MLK Day when other options are available. It's not an either-or choice. If a school district needs to make up snow days, they can reduce Spring Break or go longer in the summer or both. There is no need to compare a civil holiday with a religious holiday.

Even if we take the OP at his word (something I doubt, but I'll get to that in a moment), about being married to a woman of color, why go right to MLK Day when there are plenty of other options???

I suspect that even MLK was not in favor of having his day take the place of Good Friday.

Educational calendars are set up thruogh a calendar committe composed of school based personnel and community members. The proposed calendar is them open for public comment before radifocation by the school board. This question plays little relevance across the country, it sounds like a specific regional issue. Where I am, we have no snow days built into the calendar, if it snows we are open. If you don't want to send your kid to school--call them in sick. If it snows so much we cancel school, we make it up in June.
Snow days are not religious or secular issues. They should simply be a safety issue.
