Has anybody received VSI/SSB that are now having payments recouped from their retired pay? How long did it take until your payments started?

I assumed the recoupment would soon after my retirement. I have buddies who retired years ago and still has not started. Surely somebody is paying it back.

Even though I was told recoupment would only occur with a Reserve retirement, they are recouping starting this month with an Active retirement. I retired 9 years ago.

I was surprised to find out recently that they were going to take about 50% of my retirement check to pay back VSI - including taxes. Is anyone else experiencing that? I still have about 3 years before I get my retirement check at age 60.

Thanks for your response. I don’t have SBP, so that will make it easier. Reference the taxes, my initial statement was probably confusing. I was told that I have to pay back the gross VSI (including the taxes that were already taken out), which means we all end up paying back the taxes that were taken out. Have you heard of any of the hardship requests being approved? The 40% is better than the 50% I was told, but still a lot higher than I had planned for.

I have retired and started getting retirement pay. but I get two LESs one show sthe VSI Debt and then I get one showing full ret pay. they have not taken the VSI repayment. I called ret pay section they have my VSI recoup debt on record but I still get my full ret pay. I am taking the VSI payment and putting in a separate account till I find out what is going on?

I saw a court case in Virginia about SSB and VA disability payments. The congress did address the issue with Combat Disability payments, but did not address SSB/VSI RECOUPMENT.
