From what I’ve read it sounds like volunteers for deployments or overseas assignments if your MOS is needed. I have never met anyone that has done this could someone fill me in with a little more information?

I have. From what I can tell they are most often filled by Reservists or Guardsmen. I ended up going to Liberia in 2014. It was a great experience, even with that massive Ebola outbreak that happened during the middle of my tour. Check out Tour of Duty (https://mobcop.army.mil/tod) from a .mil network computer to search for available slots by MOS and rank.

WIAS or the Worldwide Individual Augmentation System is just the system that's set up to find specific Soldiers who possess needed MOS's for overseas deployments. It's still in use, but I would say many of the short term deployments (one year or less) are moving to a system called Tour of Duty (ToD) which is under the MOBCOP umbrella of systems for resourcing positions for overseas & CONUS missions. I been picked up on one WIAS takser, BNR by name request- but I got PCS Orders before I did get picked up.

You can get to ToD through MOBCOP if you have a CAC Card and are on a military network. If you don't you'll have to get with a recruiter or someone else that has network access to apply for positions. Look for the ToD application on MOBCOP: https://MOBCOP.army.mil
