I have in the state police. I had a Sgt that really worked at stressing me out day after day. One day I lost it and it was a good hour argument wasted listening to him go on and on...... in the military? Not sure if I ever had an all out argument. Most NCO’s in the military knew how to lead. I always had great NCO’s.

Most of my yelling to senior NCOs consisted of : "SIR, YES SIR" or "AYE-AYE SIR!". The only time it went beyond these was 1969 when I was in Field Medical Service School, (for Corpsmen) at Camp Lejeune. My Marine Staff Sgt. thought that because I was skinny and wore glasses, I did not "pack the gear" to be with HIS Marines. After a few weeks of getting every S**t detail & mockery, I had enough. I went to his office, banged on the door and said "Staff Sgt., HM Leidy requests a session of Close Order Knuckle Drill!" He smiled, complied and met me back by the wash racks. After removing our uniform shirts (no rank) and placed our I.D. Cards and dogtags on the stand, I managed to get a couple good punches in. When I came to, admiring the clouds, he gave me a hand up and told me I "Might" have the stuff after all. Of course, that was back when, before all the "touchy-feely-feel-good" stuff. It did clear the air of any misconceptions either of us had. Maybe not a bad thing after all! Semper Fi - "Doc"

When I was an Operations NCO (SFC) in a training battalion, I got into a really heated verbal argument with my Battalion Staff Sergeant Major. We were at an outdoors training site and away from the troops when it first started. The argument was about some training aids needed by the instructors. A couple of the instructors knew we had the training aids on hand and had requested them per the POI (Program of Instruction) and so I issued them. During the previous rotation, the instructors and students damaged a couple of these training aids causing excessive paperwork for the instructors, myself and the SGM. The SGM was not happy and had warmed the instructors that he was not going to issue out the training aids. I only knew about the "withholding of training aids" after the fact.

So when the SGM found out what I did, he the tracked me down and started chewing my ass out in front of a couple of the instructors (not an issue as most knew we had our issue together anyway). In any case, when we first started arguing, there were no students around besides a couple instructors, but a few minutes into it, a platoon of soldiers marched up close by (about 100 feet) without us knowing it. After a minute or two, one of the instructors stopped our "discussion" and pointed to the student platoon. We looked over and I immediately stopped the argument and walked away (knowing full well that I was going to get my ass chewed out anyway). Later I apologized to the students for the scene and drove on as if nothing else happened, but a bit latter a couple of the students told me privately they they knew the reason for the argument and ripped the SGM in their final After Action Report at the end of the training period.

The kicker was that I had my transfer and promotion orders already in hand for Master Sergeant to another organization and was set to transfer two weeks later. The SGM told me that he was going to have the transfer/Promotion orders revoked. Needless to say, he was full of BS. Luckily he had little input into my NCOER. Eventually, I was promoted to SGM and actually served in his SGM position three years later eventually making SGM to the 2-star level.

So moral of the story is, arguing with superiors are few and very far between. But they can be legit provided that you have all your ducks in a row and support by your peers that you're doing the right thing.

Go Army

We were in our last month of deployment. My Section Chief, ATC, and I (a scrappy young E3 at the time) were at the wash rack, it was really hot and we had been there for 15 hours a day for the last week so tempers were running high. My Chief, who hadn't done much that week, came out of hiding in the AC and decided I hadn't cleaned my area well enough so I said do it your fucking self he hoped up to snag the hose from me and out of left field my ATC checked him into the door. A short scuffle ensued with me egging it on from the gun hatch in the cab. My Gunny who is now a Drill sergeant came over yelling and broke it up. Noone was hurt but I got banned from the wash rack from that day forward.

Yes, with an asterisk*.
I served 4 years in the regular army, with no problems. After I got out, I decided to join the reserves (big mistake). Even though I was one of pretty much the only person who was in the reserves with full time army experience, I just couldn't relate. I didn't get along with the soldiers or leadership. One day, I was confronted by a much younger, obviously straight out of reserves officer class. Just getting out of the army in 1991 after serving time in Iraq for desert storm, I wasn't able to respect or even attempt to respect some low level lieutenant who probably graduated high school just months prior. He told me to work faster, I screamed obscenities at him and challenged him to a fistfight. He didn't back down, and we were separated. I ended up leaving camp, took off in my car, as he was threatening to have me court martialed. I never went back, and was granted an out, keeping my honorable discharge status. The regular army is the real deal, the reserves were a joke and an excuse for a bunch of losers to get drunk.

I was a Platoon Sergeant. I had a micro manager LT for Platoon Leader. I shut my door. Asked him how he got his butter bars. Army Green to Hold. Former PFC. I told him if he had wanted to be an NCO he should have stayed in. Then I told stay out of my Lane. Opened the door. Told him to get out of my office.
