Has anyone ever been on Paxil Anti-Depressents, for a lengthy time (yrs), and successfully got off of it?

That's a great question. As a prescriber I hated the side effects patients experience with Paxil and Effexor. I also have been on Zoloft for 9 years. I hate needing to take something, but it is a fact of life. The least amount of side effects overall depends on the patient and it is never one size fits all. A DNA profile for antidepressants is helpful. It shows how individuals genetically metabolize all psychiatric medications. Before starting anything, people should know the impact and possible side effects including withdrawal. A slow taper, awareness and support and understanding will help.

Noticed on the list of potential causes includes Zyrtec and PCP for those who use recreational drugs. This is a good reason to have specific genetic testing done to determine who can metabolize certain medications before the adverse reactions or trial and error period. Stress, epilepsy, MS and Parkinson's can have many bizarre symptoms. But these other medications should never be given lightly.

A1C Doug Towsley - Yep, that sounds about right. My eyes would suddenly roll upwards and to the right, and if there was a light source (oh, how I came to detest street lamps!), my eyes would go there like moths to a flame. It would happen randomly too, while driving, in the movies, at work, didn't matter. I would get massive headaches from the force of the muscular contraction holding them upwards. I would have to tilt my head down to see straight, my chin almost touching my chest. I was ever so glad to see it resolve! I had one on my second day taking Geodon, but having been forewarned by the pharmacist and the doctor, once was all it took and no more Geodon either. Haven't had one since. Didn't appear to be connected at all to my TBI but I've had periodic migraines ever since. Though my Chiari and cervical-cranial instability might play into those as well. At this point I don't look for etiology as much or as hard. I have enough to do just keeping up with symptom management and prevention whenever possible.

A1C Doug Towsley - it reminds me of that scene in the Addams Family movie where Gomez says the baby has a family member's eyes, and Morticia tells him (with that indulgent smile) to get them out of the baby's mouth. :) Great drawing. :)

Col Rebecca Lorraine - i'm on daily cetitizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra), and Singulair to manage the urticaria from my Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Not pleased at all to see the listing. I suspect having reacted once, I'm probably at higher risk to react to these, and possibly sooner. The withdrawal from cetitizine is HORRID (did it cold turkey once for patch testing). Not sure how to treat the MCAS if my current list gets taken off the table. I did a 23andme a few years ago to confirm my homozygous MTHFR 1298 mutation (duly confirmed, plus some), and running the raw through Promethease gives a clunky and rudimentary medication efficacy profile. I've always been a low and slow type, with my optimal dose often lower than the clinically accepted therapeutic baseline. But I hear that's common in those of us on the autism spectrum (I have Asperger's, very late dx).

Make sure to talk to your doctor and make a plan to reduce dosage until you are able to stop. It is never a good idea to stop psychiatric medications cold turkey. Symptoms can rebound worse than usual. Be careful & yes you can work to be medication free.

I discussed with 2 separate docs at the VA. I couldn't anyhow. My body is too reliant on it to operate without it.

If it works, it works. With proper blood work, he should be OK. Is there a reason not to continue to take them?
