I am looking for career advancement and am at a crossroads on whether to pursue a continued civilian career or to attempt to go active duty. What are your recent experiences with gaining civilian employment through social networking on this site?

I found a civilian (GS) position at a reserve base close to home thanks to RallyPoint.

RallyPoint is adding new employers on a weekly basis, as well as more tools for employers to find and connect with members directly. Below is an example of a success story highlighted earlier this year. Good luck with the search!

http://blog.rallypoint.com/2014/01/us-army-veteran-nails-prominent-role-at.html

US Army Veteran Nails Prominent Role at San Francisco Startup | RallyPoint.com

Promising San Francisco startup hires Army veteran through RallyPoint.

Awesome story. Hoping to achieve similar success as I transition over the next year. I have already gained some good contacts via RallyPoint...was able to network with Joseph Wong and Paul Turevon on possibly becoming a part of the Time Warner Cable family.

Nathan - Yinon posted a great blog about one of our RallyPoint members becoming the director of operations at a very successful startup company after applying on our Career Corner. My advice would be to never stop networking with fellow veterans in industry. You never know when a door might be opened for you.

If you're looking for raw numbers of job postings, Linked In is where to look. Bad news is any transitioning Service Members will have to be able to convert their military experience into something civilian employers can relate to (unless they're a veteran-heavy company).

This site (Rally Point) has a good start on getting employers to post here, but it's a process that necessarily takes time.

If you want a crack at the civilian job market, though, look me up on Linked In under Michael Blount. I have 5,000+ connections. I'd also recommend BeFoundJobs-dot-com. They used to have a FREE program that taught you how to attract recruiters to your Linked In Page, what to display (or in some cases, what not to display) on your page and how to filter your contacts' contacts to link up with the contacts you want.

If you're interested in the Federal contracting space, shoot me your resume (mikeblount15818@gmail), and I'll get it to our veteran recruiter. We (Leidos) have a veteran's preference program and if there's an open billet and you can do the job...

Good hunting,

r,

1SG Blount

I have used this site to contact some of the employers. It is great to be able to filter to find jobs in the geographic region I'm interested in. The problem of course is that the employers also know how to skirt around the system and have posted some jobs with "various locations" listed in order to appear in your search activity. I have had a few of the employers contact me after I have inputted my information into their website. However, as mentioned previously, they were trying to get me to consider other locations than what I was interested in.

A good Company will try and find a fit for your skills in a location that is suitable for you. It isn't always as simple as finding a location in your home town, but hopefully the company you select can help you find a good place to plant your roots.

Good question... I am trying to get back into the work force also. After being disabled for almost ten years, it's going to be hard.
