My wife and I are playing with the idea of renting an RV to PCS in 2018 from JBER. I wanted to get prior experiences from anyone that has, and hints/tips on what they would have done different.

How are your plans going with this?? We're stationed in VA and soon to be CA. We have a 70lbs dog, a 2 year old and 11 month old twins..... We're definitely thinking RV also! Any advice or good rentals you've found?

We lived a similar PCS. We owned the RV. We had to weigh it empty (keep receipts) weigh it the day of travel with all kids and dogs on board and off we went. All travel rules apply, you will be reimbursed for the weight, the mileage (at a lower rate than needed), the cost of camping spots etc. All of this is covered in the JTR and our claim went through as smooth as any other PCS we had experienced. Just know the rules retain the receipts and enjoy. My Family and I made this move in 2011 so some things may have changed.

Also, there are a lot of Pro's adn Con's with RV's you need to do some thurough research before making your final decision. Good Luck

Since I was curious I dug around and found this. I assume you can weigh it empty and full to collect the weight allowance funds. But it is best to talk to the Transportation Office.

MOBILE HOME TRANSPORTATION. When moved by commercial transporter, reimbursement includes carrier charges, road fares & tolls, permits & charges for pilot car. If towed by POC, reimbursement is for actual costs. For self-propelled mobile home, reimbursement is at 36.5 cents per mile. May be transported by GBL. Reimbursement is limited to what it would have cost the Government to transport member's maximum HHG weight allowance.

Transportation of Mobile Home is in lieu of HHG transportation and is authorized only within CONUS, within Alaska, & between CONUS & Alaska.

I will be in contact with my local TMO office; had to wait until the work week started. From everything I've seen though, it shouldn't be a big issue with that portion; hard part will be finding a one way renter
