There is a story over in TAH about a pile of baby combat medics drooling over the chance to get their CMBs. Then they were told about the Purple Heart that usually came with them...

But also, the history of vain leaders endangering their troops for "glory" regardless of how symbolized or memorialized is one of the longest concepts in military history. So it hasn't "become" that way. It remains that way. And I would argue in our relatively meritocratic and information saturated military it is less so than you would find it in most other militaries in most other times.
