But also, the history of vain leaders endangering their troops for "glory" regardless of how symbolized or memorialized is one of the longest concepts in military history. So it hasn't "become" that way. It remains that way. And I would argue in our relatively meritocratic and information saturated military it is less so than you would find it in most other militaries in most other times.
