Watch different tv shows about Marines, or in which Marines are involved(Yeah, I know it's Hollywood) and repeatedly hear characters referring to the SSgts, GySgts, and MSgts/1stSgts as Sergeant. Been outta touch lately. PLEASE tell me they don't disrespect our SSgts, GySgts, and MSgts/1stSgts in this manner today?

On TV shows they tell Marines that they make good Soldiers, so I wouldn't pay too close attention to TV

Not that I am aware of. I have only been out 9 years. I know Hollywood sucks when it comes to military uniforms, customs and courtesies.

I'm hoping that's just a "Hollywood-ism" and not standard practice.

I still remember the day as a bright young E-3 I approached a grizzled GySgt and addressed him as "Sgt". I'm thankful he took pity on my ignorance, sat me down, and educated me. "Ok, look Airman I know you aren't really in the military but here in the Marine Corps....." I learned a lot from him over the next few months and not just how to properly address Marines.
