So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I'd tell em there's a contest at the Legion where I have to bring in the first uniformed person I see so they can win $2,000. I'd then take him to a recruiting office saying I was gonna link up with a buddy, then leave his sorry ass.

But why, did it really hurt anything, I mean, a real vet would have spotted him/her right away, just what would have been gained by messing with him, I mean, he already has some type of problem to start with.

Well they have changed the uniform so much i really cant tell if these people are real. I know in my day we was not allowed to wear b.d.u.'s off the base. We had to wear class A or civilian clothing. So with all thoes changes that have been made im still trying to get my head around the idea of a stress card WTF I SAY AGAIN WTF..

There are specialists that can help him with this identity crisis, perhaps calling one would help. I know you can't fix stupid but you can at least control it from spreading. Maybe should invite him to the Corporal/Captain Desert Mess last month in the jungles of Alaska.
OK, tacky M*A*S*H* reference but worth it.

I worked with someone that claimed to have served on a riverboat in Viet Nam. He also claimed to have been advanced to chief out of RM A school. I just smiled and kept repeating Bullsh*t in my head to every word he said.

I agree that stolen valor needs to be confronted. But I also think people need to be able to identify it. I was honorably discharged for medical reasons after three years in the Navy. I only earned the NatDef, GWOT Service, and pistol and rifle expert medals. I wore my mini medals on my tux to my cousins wedding reception (which is permissible under the uniform refs) and a marine tried to call me out for stolen valor. After I pointed out my medals were in the correct order and placement on the lapel under the uniform refs he said "well aren't you ashamed of having such a small rack, why would you even wear it?" to which I replied that it was all I chance to earn and I was
Proud of having served. I feel no matter how many ribbons someone has they should be proud of ever one of them. This
Guy in the article however is all sorts of jacked up, I'm just saying I've seen other veterans called out for stolen valor when that isn't the case, and it hurts to have your service questioned like that. Hell not too long ago a bunch of marines were involved in an incident where the ripped the medals off of a Korean or WWII ( can't remember which) vet yelling stolen valor and harassing him when in fact he had served honorably. My point is: just make sure before you attack them.

This happens all the time outside my local VA hospital. Guys claiming to be prior service needing help with medical bills when the VA is right behind then. Lots of people trying to claim a spot to get a little putty money or feel important.
