So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I have seen many people wearing different military outfit pieces, some even had patches on them, worn to honor members or fiends who served. I think that is fine, but to try and impersonate a member is despicable and ai have encountered that as well.

My 75 year old non-vet father, being his usual silly self, was questioned by a sales clerk on Veteran's day as to whether or not he was a vet. He stated that yes he was but his service wasn't officially recognized as a veteran. She asked why and he replied that he fought in the Confederate Army!!! (Uh - yeah, that would make him 170-ish years old) Before he could say anything further, she entered her code for his discount and thanked him for his service. My wife and I are BOTH USAF vets and I have a daughter serving in the Army in the sand box right now. While we don't care for Stolen Valor types, we did get a chuckle out of my dad's civil war service.

During our honeymoon (1987), there was a moron who claimed to be Major in the Navy Seals. The idiot was about my age (22 at the time) and we just engaged him in conversation asking what his chances were to make Colonel and if he thought he could eventually become an Admiral.

His story was so jacked even my new bride knew he was lying. And we said....... not a word.... Figured it was best if he was an obvious obnoxious moron. (Though I still wonder if he ever pinned Colonel, for all we know he might be an Admiral by now.........)

Years of seeing former military members wearing awards and decorations they did NOT earn, discharged members promoting themselves for Veterans Day or Memorial Day...
The saddest I have ever been with one of these folks is the 'Gunnery Sergeant Major' - finely tailored Alphas, Desert Storm through Afghanistan ribbons, Rifle/Pistol Expert, 4th award, jump wings, SCUBA bubble (wrong one - wearing Master Diver, USN)...
The waistbelt was brilliant white, brass polished, waistplate incorrect (EM vs NCO). The service stripes (6) weren't too obvious (right....) but the biggest takeaway was the miniature majors' leaves on his epaulets... cover was the wrong size and had a WWII EGA...
So, what did I do? I thanked him for his service, played a round of ' Who Do We Know' and 'Where did you serve'?
And determined that he must have recruited in 1976 (age 7 or so), and he had more overseas time than Dan Daly and Lou Diamond.... no personal valor awards (not even a Heart... I don't like seeing those on a pimple -brain, and have removed a full-sized medal from a poser's khaki jacket)
By the time our conversation was done, there were a few observers who were muttering to one another... I walked away and grabbed an angry-looking retired Master Chief who had a "gonna tear someone a new sphincter" look aimed at the poser. .

It only takes one to lead the way but it's very easy four hundreds to get lost walking out their front door

At some point it is just wasting time and effort. If a guy is actually posing, he is a bolo and he knows it. Putting on an outfit to make yourself seem high-speed is a quick fix and rarely gets anything more than a few free beers, a few thank you, maybe a discount, maybe. In reality, it is only a small fraction of people who do it and they are insignificant. They can't steal the fortitude, integrity, selflessness and mental steel that serving should instill in a true vet.
Point being, they don't take much away from us.
We should be pointing out real issues. The VA letting vets die in waiting rooms, hiding bodies to cover it up, taking up to 10 years to dipose claims or just simply denying, while the responsible people keep their jobs, get raises and live without recourse. They still spend millions on artwork for offices too. Companies who claim to support veteran hiring, don't, politicians who claim support vets don't, but vets and active members still think pointing out a few guys "playing army" still make a difference. They suck, but they are not a detriment to us. Let's pick better battles folks, make the rounds count. Sorry for the rant.
